In this Start Em / Sit Em column each week, I'm looking to find some fringe players that you might consider starting each week and comment based on their matchups. Early on, I'll base my selection of candidates on where they were with respect to ADP. I'm not going to try to pad my stats by suggesting your start Josh Allen each week, but instead trying to dig deep and find some nuggets for players to avoid or to go after. These are coin flip guys and if I can finish the year at better than 60% I'll consider it a success. My metrics to get the start decision are: QB 20 pts or more, RB, WR or TE need to score 12 pts or more for a successful endorsement. Defense/Special Teams should put in 8 points or more to get those picks right. I'll look at ~3 players on each Thursday night's game and ~ 6 players for the rest of the week to get you going.

Player Pos Team Oppt Start / Sit Comment
Jared Goff QB DET KC START This is the Thursday night opener. This could turn into a shootout. The last time Goff and Mahomes met the score was 54-51
Sam Howell QB WAS ARI START Howell is looking like a legit QB, he gets a plus matchup in the opener, he's worth a gamble if you're desperate
James Connor RB ARI WAS SIT Connor is likely all Arizona has going for it to open the season, but Washington's front line is stout and will make it difficult for Connor to have a plus day in week 1.
Kenneth Gainewell RB PHI NE SIT There's a lot of talk of Gainwell being the man in Philadelphia. I suspect he has a decent role, but this isn't a great matchup and there's a lot of risk in how significant of a role he plays. Keep your powder dry with your Gainwell shares in week 1
Logan Thomas / Cole Turner TE WAS ARI START The trick here is to find out which of these TEs is starting. Is Logan healthy and has he stepped back in as a starter. You want the matchup vs the Cardinals for your TE. Plus with McLaurin having turf toe, another target is likely to emerge.
Marvin Mim WR DEN LV START LV is a plus matchup vs the WR and Mims will likely be stepping into the WR2 role for Denver with Jeudy nursing a hamstring injury
Michael Thomas WR NOR TEN START I'm not sure Thomas will be any healthier and gets a defense that was tough to run on and easy to pass on in week 1
Skyy Moore WR KC DET START Detroit has worked on improving their defense, but I think it's still a work in process. It's unclear who the Chiefs go to WR will be this year, but Moore seems to be as involved as any based on pre-season usage
Jahan Dotson WR WAS ARI START With McLaurin battling turf toe, look for Dotson too be the first option in the passing game.
