Free Agency Roundup: JuJu Signs With Chiefs & More
Another day, more free agent moves -- all of them overshadowed by the Browns acquiring Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson in a blockbuster trade.

Beyond that, let's get the ball rolling in Kansas City, where JuJu Smith-Schuster's leaving Pittsburgh for the Chiefs.

Following five seasons with the Steelers, Smith-Schuster is signing a one-year, $10.75 million deal with Kansas City.

Ahead of the 2021 offseason, Smith-Schuster was reportedly close to signing with K.C., but returned to Pittsburgh on a one-year deal.

This time, the Chiefs got their man.

The move provides yet another weapon on offense for quarterback Patrick Mahomes to go alongside Pro Bowlers Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill.

The Chiefs, who lost No. 2 wide receiver Sammy Watkins in free agency last year, struggled uncharacteristically at times on offense, lacking a consistent receiving threat other than Kelce and Hill.

Smith-Schuster will join a receiving corps that includes Hill, Mecole Hardman and Josh Gordon. Hardman last season had career highs in catches (59) and yards (693). Gordon produced little (5 receptions, 32 yards, 1 touchdown in 12 games) after joining the Chiefs early in the season but was recently re-signed.

The Chiefs lost last season's third-leading wide receiver, Byron Pringle, as a free agent to the Chicago Bears.

Smith-Schuster, 25, opted to return to the Steelers last season on a one-year deal after hitting free agency, turning down more lucrative offers. His season, though, didn't go as planned.

He injured a shoulder against the Denver Broncos in Week 5 and missed the remainder of the regular season. He finished the regular season with 15 catches for 129 yards and scored a rushing touchdown in five games.

The shoulder surgery in early October was thought to be season-ending, but Smith-Schuster returned for the Steelers' AFC wild-card loss to the Chiefs and had five catches for 26 yards.

In five seasons with the Steelers, the former second-round pick amassed 3,855 yards and 26 touchdowns on 323 catches.

His best season came in 2018, when he earned his lone Pro Bowl selection after finishing with career-best totals of 111 receptions and 1,426 yards to go along with seven touchdown catches.

Hill and Kelce will remain the primary options here, so expecting JuJu to reach 100-catch territory is a stretch. But expecting him to fare better than Hardman last year?

You bet. ...

In Dallas. ... The Cowboys are set to add their first free agent of the offseason.

Wide receiver James Washington‘s agent Drew Rosenhaus announced that his client has agreed to a deal with the team. It’s a one-year pact for the former Steeler.

Washington was a 2018 second-round pick and he played in 60 regular season games for Pittsburgh. He caught 114 passes for 1,629 yards and 11 touchdowns in those appearances and had seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown in two playoff outings.

The Cowboys traded Amari Cooper to the Browns and saw Cedrick Wilson sign with the Dolphins, so Washington joins CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup on the receiver depth chart in Dallas. ...

In Tennessee. ... The Titans are signing Austin Hooper to a one-year, $6 million deal, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

The Browns moved on from the veteran tight end, after two seasons of a four-year, $42 million contract. The 27-year-old Hoooper caught 84 passes for 780 yards and seven touchdowns in 29 regular-season games with Cleveland the past two seasons.

Now he'll have an opportunity to rebuild his reputation in the Titans' offense. ...

In Philadelphia. ... Despite being non-tendered as a restricted free agent, Boston Scott is back with the Eagles.

They are re-signing the veteran running back on a one-year deal, according to Pelissero.

A valued backup in Philly for years, Scott will collect $1.75 million on this contract — one that could be worth up to $2.25 million. Scott will receive $1.1 million guaranteed, per Pelissero. This salary checks in slightly below the low-end RFA tender amount.

Selected in the 2018 sixth round by the Saints, Scott has only seen game action as an Eagle in the pros. He has played 45 games with the team and played a role on the Eagles’ No. 1-ranked rushing attack last season. Scott scored a career-high seven rushing touchdowns in 2021, a season in which he compiled 373 ground yards.

Keeping Scott in the backfield behind Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard, both of whom struggled to avoid injury last year, makes sense.

In Las Vegas. ... In a move slightly less flashy than acquiring Davante Adams in a trade with the Packers, the Raiders have signed free agent RB Ameer Abdullah, the club announced Friday.

Abdullah joins the Silver and Black after spending time with the Carolina Panthers (2021), Minnesota Vikings (2018-21) and Detroit Lions (2015-18). The 5-foot-9, 203-pound running back has appeared in 91 career games with 23 starts, totaling 409 carries for 1,574 yards with six touchdowns and adding 119 receptions for 865 yards with seven touchdowns.

Last season, Abdullah appeared in all 17 contests with one start, recording 51 carries for 166 yards and 38 receptions for 289 yards with one TD. He set career highs with receptions (38) and receiving yards (289) in 2021. ...

In San Francisco. ... Ray Ray McCloud, a wide receiver and return man who spent the last two seasons with the Steelers, has agreed to a two-year deal with the 49ers, according to multiple reports.

In 2021 McCloud led the NFL with 38 punt returns for 367 yards. He also had 35 kickoff returns for 776 yards, and 39 catches for 277 yards. He’ll likely be the 49ers’ primary return man this year, and coach Kyle Shanahan will surely find some ways to use him on offense as well.

In Pittsburgh. ... The Steelers already McCloud's replacement.

Gunner Olszewski has agreed to a two-year, $4.2 million deal with the Steelers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Olszewski has handled both punt returns and kickoff returns for the Patriots the last two years and will likely do the same for the Steelers this year. In 2020 Olszewski was chosen as an All-Pro and led the NFL with both 346 punt return yards and a 17.3-yard average. But in 2021 he didn’t play as well, and the Patriots decided not to tender him as a restricted free agent.

The Steelers may also use Olszewski as a wide receiver, a position where he got a little bit of playing time for the Patriots in the last few years. But with McCloud moving on, Olszewski fills an immediate need. ...

In Denver. ... The Broncos traded for Russell Wilson earlier this week. On Friday, they found their backup.

Josh Johnson agreed to a contract with Denver, his agent, Doug Hendrickson, announced.

The Broncos are the 14th NFL team with whom Johnson has signed a contract. Johnson, 35, entered the league as a fifth-round choice of the Bucs in 2008.

As Profootballtalk.com notes, since then, Johnson has had stops on the 49ers, the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League, the Browns, the Bengals, the 49ers again, the Bengals again, the Jets, the Colts, the Bills, the Ravens, the Giants, the Texans, the Raiders, the Commanders, the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football, the Lions, the Los Angeles Wildcats of the XFL, the 49ers a third time, the Jets a second time and the Ravens a second time.

Johnson has played 37 games with nine starts and has a 58.1 completion percentage for 2,270 yards with 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He played three games for the Jets last season and started one for the Ravens.

The Broncos also have Brett Rypien on their roster at the position.
