Jordan Howard 2020 Outlook
The Dolphins signed Howard because they need a running back focused on positive yards. Howard was quick to point out the Dolphins made no promises about any role and the subsequent trade for former 49er Matt Breida suggests it will be a timeshare. "I'm not scared of competition," Howard said. "Competition makes you better." One thing Howard battled last season was a shoulder injury, and he really struggled to regain strength in the shoulder. "It took a while," Howard said. "But I'm finally back to being 100 percent. ..." Howard ran for 1,313 yards and 1,122 yards in his first two seasons with the Bears. He regressed in his third season and was dealt last year to the Eagles where he posted 4.4 yards per carry, a mark just above his career average. The Dolphins will likely be fine with that. In fact, as NFL.com's Maurice Jones-Drew pointed out, even last year's career-low output would have led the Dolphins as no Miami running back managed to crack even 250 yards (or surpass 37-year-old QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's 243 rushing yards). This team desperately needs a back who can make defenses respect the run game and wear down his opponents, which is exactly what Howard, who has 30 career touchdowns, can do -- even if he's sharing with Breida.
