Miles Sanders 2023 Outlook
It seemed like Sanders wanted to catch up on all those touchdown opportunities he missed from 2021. After failing to reach the end zone over 12 starts in 2021, Sanders had his best season yet and more than doubled his previous career total for rushing TDs. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod, which in turn earned him a nice payday in free agency. As the new coach of the Carolina Panthers, Frank Reich’s main expectation will be to mold quarterback and No. 1 overall draft pick Bryce Young into a top-level starter. The offense that he and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown design is difficult to project, but one word that keeps coming up in interviews is balance. So it isn’t fair to expect another 259 attempts coming for Sanders now that he’s left Philadelphia. This Panthers’ team no longer has Christian McCaffrey, nor D’Onta Foreman, who wound up as the starter and leading rusher once McCaffrey was traded. But Chuba Hubbard is a solid No. 2 back for Carolina and might even be worth a handcuff to Sanders if you’re playing in a deeper league.
Miles Sanders 2022 Outlook
The Eagles seemingly refused to run the football early in its first season under Nick Sirianni -- even with a playmaker like Sanders available in their backfield. That changed, of course, midway through the 2022 season, when Sirianni shifted his team's offensive identity toward the run. Philadelphia would eventually finish atop the league in rushing yards per game. Sanders benefitted accordingly, breaking 120 rushing yards twice in Weeks 13 and 14 on his way to a 754-yard season. Overall, Sanders touched the ball 163 times with 912 yards and still, somehow, failed to score a single touchdown. When healthy and fed, Sanders proved that he can knife through defenses. His 5.5 yards per carry average was tied for second-best among backs in the NFL. If healthy he could soar over the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. The concerns are obvious, however: Health issues kept him from playing a full season, forcing him to miss five games. In his place, Jordan Howard, Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell all saw opportunities to produce, and Jalen Hurts' development as a dual-threat runner resulted in the second-year quarterback leading the team in rushing yards with a production rate that was eerily similar to Sanders, who will need a legitimate workload to be a reliable fantasy option. That's a reach based on his career to date.
Miles Sanders 2021 Outlook
The Eagles selected Sanders in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the highest they'd drafted a running back since LeSean McCoy. We're all still waiting for Sanders to deliver on that investment. ... As SI.com notes, consistency has been the biggest issue. He struggled to catch the ball last year and also had trouble staying healthy, playing in just 11 games, with one of the missed games being the season opener when the Eagles were upset by the Washington Football Team. A home run threat, who had a league-high three runs of 50-plus yards this past season, Sanders' skill set demands rhythm to impose his ability on opposing defenses. According to Pro Football Focus, Sanders' league rankings for carries are 22nd in 2019 and 21st in 2020. The lack of usage has greatly hampered the potential rushing productivity he could bring to Philadelphia's backfield. Hopefully, incoming coach and offensive boss Nick Sirianni will lean on the rushing attack as a crutch for unproven second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts, and he'll give Sanders more consistent touches so the running back can build his rhythm. A healthier offensive line would also help, as would Sanders improving on his league-worst 15.1 percent drop-rate. Working against him? Off-season additions Kenneth Gainwell and Kerryon Johnson.
