Patrick Mahomes 2020 Outlook
In 2018, Mahomes was named NFL MVP after becoming the third player in league history to throw at least 50 touchdown passes in a single season. In 2019, working through injuries and missing two games, Mahomes didn't catch fire until the postseason, where he threw 10 touchdowns against two interceptions and led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title in 50 years, becoming the youngest Super Bowl MVP in the process. In regular-season play, Mahomes was a top-10 fantasy QB six times (all top-5 finishes), but NFL.com notes he also had five games with 18 or fewer points. But here's the good part: He’s only been playing quarterback since his junior year of high school. As Mahomes explained in March, he "didn't really understand how to read defenses until halfway through last year. ... This year, I could actually recognize more and more stuff, and I think the more experience and the more I learn, I'll be able to go out there and call plays and do that different stuff because I've seen it. And that's where I feel that mentally, I can get better. ..." That'll be good news for fantasy owners likely to get a bit of a discount due to last season’s diminished totals.
Patrick Mahomes 2019 Outlook
Mahomes earned NFL MVP honors following a truly remarkable 2018 campaign. The 23-year-old, who was also named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, became the youngest recipient of the MVP award since Dan Marino in 1984. None of which comes as a huge surprise. As NFL.com suggested, it's difficult to find a historical precedent for Mahomes because of his combination of athletic gifts, smarts and creativity. The second-year QB finished with 50 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 5,097 yards and 8.8 yards-per-attempt, in large part because even the right defensive play calls didn't work against him. Cornerbacks found themselves out of position because Mahomes' ball arrived so fast. His receivers, even when covered early in plays, enjoyed extra time to get open thanks to Mahomes' creativity outside the pocket. Mahomes showed the maturity of a veteran by reading coverages and looking off defenders. The game appears slow to him. Because of all that, expectations will be sky high this season. Can he match his 2018 production? Some regression seems all but certain (it's hard to imagine the Chiefs again averaging the 4.11 TDs per game they scored last season) and Tyreek Hill is facing some serious issues that could keep him off the field for an extended period of time. That being said it won't be enough to keep Mahomes from being the first QB drafted this fall.
Patrick Mahomes 2018 Outlook
The off-season trade that sent Alex Smith to Washington leaves Mahomes as the Chiefs' starting QB. The news came as no real surprise. Mahomes has been the team's quarterback of the future since the Chiefs moved up 17 spots to draft him in the first round of the 2017 draft. Mahomes only has one start under his belt, but it was a 27-24 win over the Broncos in Week 17 in which he completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards and one interception. Known for his rocket arm and athleticism, Mahomes will now have the entire offseason to get accustomed to his new starting role in the Chiefs' offense. As he prepared for the role, Mahomes worked with some of the Chiefs' skill-position players during the offseason. And it's a solid supporting cast with newcomer Sammy Watkins joining Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and returning four of five starters on the line. As CBSSports.com suggested, the group has the look of a formidable unit (assuming Mahomes' belief that all involved will "check their egos at the door" is correct), with the potential to reach elite status if Mahomes displays enough pocket presence and accuracy to get the most out of his immense physical gifts. Worth noting here, Mahomes and the Chiefs have the second hardest schedule for the all-important fantasy playoff period.
