Sammy Watkins 2022 Outlook
The Packers signed Watkins to a one-year $4 million contract in March. Once seen as a potential star No. 1 receiver, Watkins struggled with injuries early in his career before being traded from Buffalo to Los Angeles. He caught eight touchdown passes in 15 games with the Rams, leading to Watkins signing a healthy three-year, $48 million deal with the Chiefs in 2018, but he's since gone from a quality No. 2 option to a supplementary-at-best role with both the Chiefs and Ravens. In Baltimore's run-first offense, Watkins caught just 27 passes for 394 yards and one touchdown in 2021. All of those marks were career-lows for Watkins, who at 28 years old isn't receiving much attention from prospective teams. A move to Green Bay might be just what Watkins needs. The Packers traded Davante Adams to Las Vegas and lost Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency, leaving incoming rookie Christian Watson, Allen Lazard and fellow veteran Randall Cobb as their top targets for Aaron Rodgers. Watkins could add to that as 2021 draft selection Amari Rodgers continues to adjust to the pro game. Watkins could also see an increase in targets after getting just 49 of them in Baltimore last season, the lowest total of his career.
Sammy Watkins 2021 Outlook
The Ravens have their veteran receiver -- even if he wasn't their first choice. ... After striking out in attempts to land JuJu Smith-Schuster and T.Y. Hilton, the Ravens agreed to terms with Watkins on a one-year, $6 million deal with $5 million fully guaranteed. Watkins reunites with offensive coordinator Greg Roman and passing-game specialist Keith Williams. In 2015, Roman's only full season as the Bills' offensive coordinator, Watkins produced career highs with 1,047 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. Adding Watkins resolves the Ravens' difficult pursuit of finding an experienced wide receiver for quarterback Lamar Jackson and should help to boost the NFL's 32nd-ranked passing attack. Last season the Ravens' wideouts ranked last in the NFL in catches (137) and receiving yards (1,729). Watkins' 4,665 career receiving yards are more than double the combined career total of the Ravens' current wide receivers (2,032). If he can stay healthy, Watkins can team with Marquise Brown as Baltimore's starting wide receivers and complement the youngster as a valuable underneath target for Jackson. Remember, however, tight end Mark Andrews has been the focal point of the passing attack in recent seasons.
Sammy Watkins 2020 Outlook
Before winning the Super Bowl, Watkins admitted he'd consider taking a pay cut to stay in Kansas City. That salary cut finally came. Watkins agreed to a new one-year contract worth $9 million in base salary with an additional $7 million in incentives that could get the deal to $16 million. The new contract also includes a no-trade clause. After re-signing Demarcus Robinson, retaining Watkins keeps the top 4 of the Chiefs' receiver corps intact for another playoff run in 2020. The 26-year-old receiver wasn't worth the nearly $14 million he was set to make, but still plays a crucial role in Kansas City. Watkins, who last season posted his highest regular-season totals since 2015, led the Chiefs during their post-season run with 288 yards on 14 catches with a TD. In big playoff games the past two seasons, Watkins has stepped up huge, including in the team’s Super Bowl comeback victory. So, the upside is there. It's worth noting, however, Watkins has missed at least one game in each of the past five regular seasons, averaging 12.0 games played per season during the span. ESPN's Mike Clay believes inconsistent production and Watkins’ injury risk only boosts second-year Mecole Hardman's sleeper appeal.
