Michael Gallup 2023 Outlook
Since that sensational sophomore season with the Cowboys in 2019, Gallup hasn’t quite shown the dependability or flashes of brilliance folks were hoping would be the stuff of regularity in Big D. Gallup was targeted 31 fewer times last season than in 2022, his most recent full campaign, while his average yards per catch dwindled to 10.9. That’s the lowest in Gallup’s five seasons and nearly six yards shy of his average in 2019. Playing after recovering from a torn ACL he suffered late in the 2021 season, Gallup didn’t make his season debut until October. He had a season-best yardage day of just 63 during a Week 12 Thanksgiving win against the New York Giants, and caught a pair of touchdowns against Indianapolis in the team’s next game. As Dallas tries to get over the playoff hump behind quarterback Dak Prescott and embattled (or not?) coach Mike McCarthy, the franchise will need Gallup to rediscover his big-play talent to make that move to achieving status as one of the NFC’s elite teams.
Michael Gallup 2022 Outlook
The Cowboys finalized a five-year deal, $62.5 million deal with Gallup as free agency opened in March. The deal includes a $10 million signing bonus. Gallup's deal came the day after the Cowboys agreed to trade wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Browns. As ESPN.com's Todd Archer reminded readers, Gallup was set to hit the free-agent market, but he opted to remain with the team that drafted him in 2018 and rehab with the athletic training staff he trusts after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in January. Gallup, who turned 26 on March 4, had surgery in February to repair his ACL, but the expectation is he would be ready for game action in September, even if he misses a game or two. He played in just nine games for the Cowboys in 2021 after suffering a calf strain in Week 1 and the ACL injury in Week 17. For his career, Gallup has 193 catches for 2,902 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2019, he had his first 1,000-yard season, finishing with a career-high 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. With the Cowboys moving on from Cooper, the Cowboys are banking on CeeDee Lamb and Gallup, once he is healthy, to step into larger roles on the offense.
Michael Gallup 2021 Outlook
Gallup is entering his fourth season -- a contract year at that -- after being selected in the third round of the 2018 draft, and he has been a force to be reckoned with his entire career. Gallup started half of the 16 games his rookie season, putting up 507 receiving yards behind an impressive 15.4 yards per reception. 2019 was the coming-out party for Gallup as he exploded for over 1,100 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 66 catches. In 2020, he played with four different quarterbacks and still managed to be as efficient as ever. Fans may also remember Gallup making two crucial sideline catches in a win against the Giants last October when Andy Dalton took over late in the game for an injured Dak Prescott. His ability to track the football and make physically contested catches has made the lives of every quarterback he's played with easier. Remember, this offense was plenty capable of fueling the fantasy fires of three wideouts with Prescott at the helm. In fact, while Prescott was healthy, he threw for more than 1,800 yards while tossing nine touchdowns to four interceptions, and Dallas' offense ranked first in yards per game and third in points. That level of offense would be more than enough to keep Gallup viable.
