Austin Hooper 2020 Outlook
It didn't take Hooper long to strike it rich when free agency opened in March, signing a four-year deal with Cleveland worth $44 million -- making him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. Over the last three seasons, he leads all tight ends with a 77.3 catch percentage, and Hooper is coming off his best NFL campaign despite missing three games with an MCL sprain. Through the first eight games of 2019, he was fifth in the league among all receivers with 52 catches, trailing only Michael Thomas, DeAndre Hopkins, Cooper Kupp, and Julian Edelman. Hooper was a fantasy star for much of last season, averaging 14.7 points per game (third-most among tight ends). In his first nine games, Hooper finished in the top 10 seven times and his worst finish was TE14. The numbers fell after the knee injury as you would expect. While Hooper struggled to win one-on-one matchups during his time with the Falcons, sharing the field with Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry in Cleveland, he will have weapons around him, similar to the environment he enjoyed in Atlanta with Julio Jones on the outside. New head coach Kevin Stefanski knows how to use the tight end position in the passing game and off of play-action, so this seems to be an ideal fit.
Austin Hooper 2019 Outlook
For the most part, the Falcons' offense remains relatively intact heading into 2019, outside of Tevin Coleman, who signed a free-agent deal with the San Francisco 49ers. But even with a foundation consisting of Matt Ryan, Devonta Freeman, Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley and Mohamed Sanu, Hooper knows the unit will experience transition under new OC Dirk Koetter. Instead of the depth-based passing scheme favored by former coordinator Steve Sarkisian, the Falcons are switching to a step-based system with Koetter, who previously served in the same role in Atlanta from 2012-14. Hooper finds himself adjusting as he comes off a Pro Bowl season. To get a better grasp of the route-running expectations within the scheme, Hooper won't alter his off-season routine from last summer when he spent a lot of time working out with Ryan. So, can he set new career bests for the third consecutive season? As CBSSports.com reminded readers, for that to happen, Hooper will have to finish with more than four touchdowns and exceed 700 yards. In this iteration of the Falcons' offense -- and given Hooper's track record as a short-area receiving option -- it seems possible but not with much upside. The bigger issue for fantasy owners, at least to this point in his career, is that Hooper has failed to deliver on a consistent weekly basis.
Austin Hooper 2018 Outlook
Hooper started 2017 off with a 100-yard game in the Week 1 opener and then preceded to lose the confidence of the team and, more importantly, his quarterback. He finished with 49 catches for 526 yards and three touchdowns. Nonetheless, Hooper was mentioned by HC Dan Quinn as one player who the Falcons expect elevated performance from in 2018. D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes, "I'm really looking forward to where Austin Hooper is going to go," Quinn said. "In the run game, he can get better. ... (But) he's a really committed football guy. I think there will be a big jump." According to CBSSports.com, it's likely that showing some improvement as a blocker would help Hooper increase his snap count from last season's 76.6 percent, but more consistent production as a receiver would bolster his chances of being a part of the Falcons' long-term plans even more.
