Russell Wilson 2022 Outlook
In what ESPN characterized as one of the largest trades in NFL history, the Broncos agreed to send a significant package to the Seahawks in exchange for Wilson. The trade gives Denver the quarterback it has sought since Peyton Manning retired, and it gives Seattle a foundation on which to rebuild without the quarterback who led the Seahawks to their only Super-Bowl title. Wilson's presence in Denver's offense means an obvious upgrade for their pass catchers Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy, though it'll still be a crowded group that also includes KJ Hamler and Tim Patrick. The stock of Albert Okwuegbunam will also rise, as he'll take over as the Broncos No. 1 tight end with Noah Fant in Seattle as part of this trade. The move should mean greater things for the running game, too, as Wilson will help keep defenses honest. Javonte Williams would have been worth a first-round fantasy pick if the Broncos hadn't retained Melvin Gordon (who is very close to Wilson, by the way). As for Wilson, he'll see a slight rise in value in the offense of new coach Nathaniel Hackett. As SI.com's Michael Fabiano put it, "I'm not sure he'll be a top five fantasy quarterback at what is a super talented position at the top, but Hackett should certainly let Russ cook after this trade!'
Russell Wilson 2021 Outlook
Oh the drama. ... While Wilson never actually demanded a trade, he hinted at it in expressing his frustration over all the hits he has taken. He also stated a desire for more say in the team's personnel decisions and their offensive scheme. Remember, before last season Wilson had privately lobbied for the Seahawks to throw earlier and more often, and he publicly endorsed the "Let Russ Cook" movement that led to more of the offense going through its $35 million-per-year quarterback. And, for the first 10 weeks of the season, the Seahawks dropped back to pass more than any other team in the NFL at 69.2 percent. But a Week 11 win over Arizona marked a reversion back toward the run-heavy approach coach Pete Carroll has always favored. Seattle fell to 16th in dropback rate over the final seven weeks of the regular season, at 62.4 percent. As SI.com noted, during that time, Wilson was barely a No. 1 fantasy quarterback (QB12). Conversely, over the first eight games, Wilson threw 29 TDs and averaged 28.5 fantasy points per game. Despite the mid-season downturn, it's worth noting only one QB in the league threw five touchdowns in multiple games in 2020: Wilson, who has the supporting cast and deep-ball touch to remain a QB1 this season, even if Seattle remains run-heavy.
Russell Wilson 2020 Outlook
HC Pete Carroll said in March that his team's commitment to establishing the run does not put any restraints on Wilson. That's not really a surprise. The commitment to a strong, physical run game has always been at the core of Carroll's offensive philosophy, and that won't change. The goal is for the run to set up big plays for Wilson. We saw that at the outset of 2019 as the QB was an early favorite for league MVP and had arguably his most efficient season yet, finishing with a career-low five interceptions. He completed 66.1 percent of his throws for 4,110 yards and 31 touchdowns and earned a 106.3 passer rating. And even though he struggled in the stat sheets down the stretch last season (he scored fewer than 17 fantasy points in all but one of his final seven games), NFL.com notes that Wilson was still an impressive fourth in points per completion (0.82) and fifth in points from rushing attempts (52.2). So while that late-season swoon was problematic for his owners, the fact he scored 24-plus fantasy points in five of his first nine games (including two games with 39-plus) is reason enough to once again set expectations high heading into 2020.
