Travis Kelce 2020 Outlook
Once again, Kelce edges out San Francisco's George Kittle to top our list of fantasy tight ends. As CBSSports.com put it, "The five-time Pro Bowler 'only' scored six TDs during the Chiefs' Super Bowl [season], but let's not overcomplicate this: He's the best. ..." At 30, he may not be as spry as Kittle, who's got three fewer seasons of wear and tear. But on a Chiefs offense loaded with star power, Kelce still stands out as Patrick Mahomes' most reliable target with four straight years with at least 80 catches and 1,000 yards. He's also remarkably reliable (one missed game over the last six years). Per NFL.com, all of his top-10 finishes last season were top fives, and he led the position with 14 double-digit performances including five with 20-plus points. What's more, Kelce failed to finish outside of the top 20 in just one of his 16 games. Yes, Kittle was very close in fantasy points per game average, but playing in a more explosive Kansas City offense is the difference maker here. CBS summed it up best: "You could argue that Kittle, Zach Ertz and maybe even Mark Andrews have a higher ceiling, but no one's got such a steady floor, and considering his supporting cast, there's no reason to expect any drop-off from Kelce's run of gaudy numbers.'
Travis Kelce 2019 Outlook
Kelce has been nothing short of dominant over the last three seasons, hauling in at least 80 catches and 1,000 or more yards every year in that span. His 2018 campaign yielded the triple crown, setting career-highs for catches, yardage and touchdowns. His 1,336 yards were briefly an NFL record and are now second all-time in league history (behind Kittle). Hence, that total is the most in a single season by a TE for the Chiefs franchise, as are his 103 catches, achievements all the more impressive considering Tony Gonzalez was a Chief for most of his career and he's headed to the Hall of Fame later this year. A matchup nightmare for opposing defenses and a consistent standout for the Chiefs, Kelce is a two-time All-Pro who has been selected to the Pro Bowl for four consecutive campaigns. Playing alongside Patrick Mahomes certainly helps. In fact, in his first year with Patrick Mahomes, Kelce outscored all but eight wide receivers and all but five running backs in PPR formats. The uncertainty surrounding Tyreek Hill's issues is worth watching, but it's not necessarily a hit on Kelce, who should be fully recovered from an ankle cleanup when camp opens, if the speedy wideout doesn't play (those targets are going somewhere, right?).
Travis Kelce 2018 Outlook
Kelce posted his second straight 1,000-yard season and remains a key cog in Kansas City's offense. When the team struggled in the wild-card loss to Tennessee after Kelce went down with a concussion, it underscored the lack of depth behind him. And from a fantasy perspective, that's okay. In fact, the more work Kelce gets -- and he was targeted a whopping (for a tight end) 122 times last season -- the more he gets done. According to Pro Football Focus, that's because Kelce is really good with the ball in his hands. In fact, Kelce led all tight ends in yards after the catch last season with 439, or 76 more than the second-closest tight end (Rob Gronkowski). When PFF sorted by missed tackles forced, Kelce led the position with 16, or six more than the next-closest tight end (Vernon Davis). This isn't new ground for Kelce, either. In 2016, Kelce also led in yards after contact with 652, or 240 more than the next-closest tight end (Martellus Bennett), and ranked fourth in missed tackles forced (10).In fact, Kelce owns three of PFF's top-10 tight end seasons this past decade in both yards after the catch and missed tackles forced, while no other tight end makes more than two appearances in the top-10 of either metric. Don't look for the shift to Patrick Mahomes at QB to change much of this.
