MINNESOTA VIKINGS UPDATE

lNO COOK; MATTISON ON THE MEND HEADING INTO FINALE

Following up on this week's Team Notes. ... Dalvin Cook will miss Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions because of the death of his father, according to a league source.

Cook returned to his home in Miami on Tuesday to be with his siblings and will miss the Vikings' daily COVID-19 tests, making him unavailable for the season finale.

Cook's father, James, was 46 years old. The Vikings offered their condolences to Cook in a tweet Wednesday but have not announced the two-time Pro Bowler's status for Sunday.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins and rookie wide receiver Justin Jefferson also expressed condolences Wednesday to Cook.

Cook leads the NFL in total yards from scrimmage (1,918) and scrimmage yards per game (137) and has scored 17 touchdowns this season. He is second in the league in rushing yards with 1,557, behind Tennessee Titans star Derrick Henry (1,777).

Cook joined Adrian Peterson and Robert Smith as the only players in Vikings history to rush for 1,500 yards in a season.

Meanwhile, Alexander Mattison (concussion) returned to practice Wednesday, putting him on track to start Sunday's game against Detroit in place of Cook (personal), Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

As CBSSports.com reminded readers, between an appendectomy and now the concussion, Mattison has missed three of Minnesota's past four games. He'll have a nice chance to end the season on a high note if he's cleared from the concussion protocol, likely stepping in as the Vikings' lead back against a Lions defense that's given up the fourth-most rushing yards per game (135.5).

The Vikings also have Ameer Abdullah and Mike Boone in the backfield, but the two have combined for only 14 carries this season.

Beyond that, tight end Kyle Rudolph (foot) was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday, which could very well mark the end of his tenure in Minnesota after a decade, while left tackle Riley Reiff was moved to the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday.

Kicker Dan Bailey was held out of Wednesday's practice with a back issue.

One last note. ... During his weekly Wednesday news conference, head coach Mike Zimmer declined to say whether he has made a decision to rest starters -- or at least his remaining starters - in Week 17. Minnesota was eliminated from postseason contention with a Christmas Day loss to the New Orleans Saints.
