Derrick Henry 2023 Outlook
Build yourself a time machine, head back to 2020 and try to tell any fantasy football-loving individual who will listen that Henry’s draft stock might slip to the end of the first round in the very near future. Many would be left with their mouths agape, though some savvy analysts might nod in agreement, speaking of natural regression and the inability to sustain double-digit touchdown seasons for, say, five years in a row. That’s when you can get cocky. “Oh, but Henry has scored double-digit touchdowns for five years in a row! All that’s slowed him down was missing half of 2021 with a foot injury -- and he had 10 TDs by then anyway.” Henry’s production has remained elite, his usage outstripped even Jacobs’ and he received votes for MVP, Offensive Player of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year in 2022. Why is the former No. 1 fantasy pick seventh on this list, then? Well, the Tennessee Titans have gotten worse -- and he might not even be playing for them come Week 1, if trade rumors are to be believed. Wait and see how Henry’s situation looks in August.
Derrick Henry 2022 Outlook
Henry missed the final nine games of the regular season with a foot injury before returning to action in the divisional round game against the Bengals. He ran 20 times for 62 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Cincinnati, but the play that stuck out was a fourth down run that went for a two-yard loss with just over seven minutes left in the game. It's a play that Henry said he'll be replaying in his mind until the Titans are back on the field again. ... Henry ran 219 times in the first eight weeks of the season, which put him on pace for a career high after carrying the ball 681 times over the previous two seasons. Vrabel said that he "didn't get that sense from any doctor" that wear and tear from that workload was a cause of the injury, which suggests the Titans will continue to feature Henry as the centerpiece of their offense once they get back to work. That being the case, fantasy managers shouldn't shy away. The Titans' offense runs through a very narrow band of players with receivers Robert Woods and rookie Treylon Burks the only high-end prospects beyond Henry following A.J. Brown's trade to Philadelphia. If you're concerned he's wearing down, continue drafting Henry while considering additional depth at the position.
Derrick Henry 2021 Outlook
Henry ran away with 2020 Offensive Player of the Year honors after becoming the eighth running back to top 2,000 yards in a single season. His 2,027 yards were the fifth-most in NFL history and he won the rushing title for a second consecutive year. He also led the league in carries (378), rushing touchdowns (17), touches (397) and yards from scrimmage (2,141). He had three games with more than 200 yards. Worth noting: Over the last two seasons, Henry doesn't just lead the NFL in rushing yards with 3,567 in the regular season, he has more yards after contact -- 3,130 -- than any other NFL back has compiled in total rushing yards. That's 438 more yards after contact than any other running back gained in total. Even if you counted only Henry's yards after contact last season (1,490), he would've finished as the No. 2 rusher, just 67 yards behind our hypothetical league leader. Is there downside? As SI.com's Michael Fabiano notes, the average decline in rushing yards among the previous seven 2,000-yarders who played at least 12 games is 807, and the average decline in fantasy points is an eye-popping 120.6. So is there reason for concern? Sure. If you believe Henry is average. We don't.
