Alexander Mattison 2023 Outlook
So it wasn’t a year to remember for Mattison. It doesn’t seem the fantasy football hype train is slowing down for him. The Minnesota Vikings welcomed the 2019 third-round draft pick back on a two-year deal after his rookie contract expired. It even caught some people’s attention in May when the Vikings put up a new banner photo on their official Twitter account that featured Kirk Cousins, Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson and. ... Mattison, not Dalvin Cook. Mattison’s rushing yards in 2022 represented a career low, but his six total touchdowns were a career high. He’s an option for Minnesota in the red zone and has filled in admirably enough for Cook whenever he’s been injured or otherwise unavailable. And in the event the Vikings trade Cook away (or outright release him), Mattison’s fantasy value obviously will soar. Temper your expectations for now, keep him in mind as a Cook handcuff if that’s your thing and remember that, as we mentioned with the Lions above, the Vikings play some of the worst run defenses in the league this season
Alexander Mattison 2022 Outlook
As PurplePTSD.com recently noted, the Vikings are one of the deepest teams at running back. Mattison currently sits behind starter Dalvin Cook with Kene Nwangwu and Ty Chandler also on hand, with both offering skill and upside. While some local observers believes Nwangwu is a player to watch this summer, Mattison remains the most likely replacement if Cook misses time. Playing second fiddle to a three-time Pro Bowler generally hinders a player's output, but ZoneCoverage.com reminded readers that Mattison has found ways to show his value when Minnesota gave him the opportunity. In four games as a starter last year, Mattison was excellent for the Vikings, rushing for 356 yards at a clip of 4.2 yards per carry and 89 yards per game with four touchdowns over that span. There are many similarities between Cook and Mattison when you compare their numbers from 2021. The only glaring difference is that Cook started nine more games than Mattison last year and that Cook costs the Vikings a lot more than Mattison. Cook will also cost fantasy managers a lot more than Mattison. That said, Cook investors in fantasy will need to pay a premium for what's been a plug-and-play role for Mattison. The premium has been worth it to date and will again, unless Nwangwu makes a push. That's something to watch for in training camp.
Alexander Mattison 2021 Outlook
Heading into the 2020 season, there were big things expected from Mattison, even working in a timeshare to keep Dalvin Cook healthy and fresh. Instead, Mattison spent most of 2020 on the back burner in an "emergency-only role" after Cook signed a five-year extension in September and finished the year with 356 touches. This year, with a 17-game season, the Vikings might choose to better manage Cook's workload, and Mattison has shown that he can make things happen when given opportunities. With Cook out following the death of his father in Week 17 last season, Mattison ran for 95 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries while pulling in all three of his targets for 50 yards and a receiving TD against the Lions. Beyond that, he garnered double-digit carries in Weeks 5, 6, 9 and 17, but otherwise only twice exceeded six rush attempts in a game. Given all that, and with fellow reserve Mike Boone moving on to Denver via free agency, Mattison remains an elite insurance policy as he heads into his third year under contract in 2021. Those looking to handcuff should view his role behind Cook as rock-solid in that regard.
