Dalvin Cook 2020 Outlook
Assuming his contract issues are resolved before the season opens, Cook will remain the centerpiece of the Vikings' offense. And with Gary Kubiak taking over the OC role, the expectations for Cook in 2020 will only rise -- with the RB himself leading the charge. "Two thousand yards," Cook said in March. "We could go like a 1,500 [rushing] and a 500 [receiving]. 1,500, 500. Or, 1,400, 600!" Christian McCaffrey was the only player to hit a combined 2,000 scrimmage yards last year with his 1,000/1,000 season. Still, Cook compiled 1,135 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 250 attempts and added 519 receiving yards on 53 catches in 14 games last season. Not only did the RB sit out the final two weeks, he also had fewer than 12 carries in three of the final four games he played. Despite the missed time, Cook ranked second behind McCaffrey among running backs in fantasy points per game (20.9). He was also second in top-5 finishes -- seven times out of 14 games. Had Cook not hurt his shoulder, he would have approached that 1,500, 500 benchmark and now with Kubiak fully in charge, expect Cook's workload to remain sky-high. If he stays healthy (and doesn't miss time to a holdout), those 2,000 yards are within reach.
Dalvin Cook 2019 Outlook
After a torn ACL ended his first season and hamstring injuries cost him the better part of six games in 2018, it's reasonable to expect a healthy Cook to surpass his overall career numbers this season. Remember, the second-year man didn't carry the ball more than 19 times in any game last season, after logging 22 and 27 carries in two of his first three games in the NFL. That figures to change with the arrival of offensive assistant Gary Kubiak, who will work under OC Kevin Stefanski in 2019. Kubiak's teams have long prioritized the zone-running schemes that helped make Terrell Davis a Hall of Famer and turned Arian Foster into the NFL's leading rusher in 2010. Beyond the benefits of Kubiak's scheme, we would like to see some improvement along the offensive line (a point of emphasis in April's draft) and for Cook to finally avoid injury. If he does? During the 13 games in which Cook didn't miss a substantial chunk of time, he handled 61 percent of the team's designed runs (14.2 per game) and 14 percent of the targets (4.7 per game). As ESPN's Mike Clay understated, "That's RB1-level usage."
Dalvin Cook 2018 Outlook
All indications are that Cook will be ready to roll after his rookie season was cut short by a torn ACL. In fact, GM Rick Spielman recently suggested that Cook's rehab and recovery could lead to success similar to that of former Vikings running back Adrian Peterson when he returned to the field in 2012 following his ACL injury. "He's progressed very nicely," Spielman said of Cook. "We have no reason to believe Dalvin won't even be stronger than he was before the injury. We're very excited about getting him back on the field." The Vikings second-round pick in 2017 was injured in Week 4 and missed the remainder of the season. Before the injury, Cook demonstrated the ability to be a high-end featured back capable of handling an every-down role. His speed, vision and ability to hit the hole gave us all a taste of what's to come assuming the knee isn't an ongoing issue. While fantasy owners need to monitor his progress through August, the Vikings training staff's long history of success with ACL rehabs (which includes but also goes beyond Peterson) will certainly work in his favor. When he's healthy? Expect Cook to be among the busiest running backs in the NFL.
