Dalvin Cook 2022 Outlook
As NFL.com recently pointed out, Cook ranked in the top five in runs over 10-plus yards and 20-plus yards and in the top 10 in rush yards over expected last season. But at this stage of every back's career, there are questions about whether the workload is begging to take its toll. He earned 249 carries in 2021 after 312 in 2020 and 250 in 2019. The load could be catching up soon for the Pro Bowler. Meanwhile, with Kevin O'Connell on hand as the head coach, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips won't be calling the plays for the Vikings in 2022 but he recently shared some insight into what the team's approach is going to look like on that side of the ball. One area that Phillips touched on was running the football. "The running game is important, but I would say that winning the game is most important," Phillips said. "You're going to play some teams who, scheme-wise, they make it very difficult to run based on their personnel and their scheme. ..." As Profootballtalk.com suggests, with Cook on hand, the Vikings aren't likely to be abandoning the run at a drop of a hat but the way they handle getting him the ball may look a bit different than it did under the previous regime.
Dalvin Cook 2021 Outlook
There's no denying the production. Beyond the high-end totals, FantasyPros notes that Alvin Kamara (six) and Cook (four) were the only running backs who scored more than three touchdowns in a game in 2020. Cook also tied Derrick Henry for the league lead with 78 broken tackles. But, as NFL.com noted, the history for running backs a year after taking 300-plus carries isn't pretty. Whether Cook can follow Henry's lead and improve despite a hefty workload will be a big question for Minnesota entering the new season. A new offensive coordinator will take over for the Vikings, but with HC Mike Zimmer tapping Klint Kubiak for the job, the son of retiring incumbent Gary Kubiak probably won’t change the scheme substantially. The Vikes, however, would like to lighten Cook's workload at least a bit this season. "I think it's important that we monitor Dalvin's workload as we go forward," Zimmer said. "But we need our best players in the game. Dalvin is not only one of our best players, but one of the best players in the NFL." Bottom line? It's hard to take a player with Cook's talent off the field. Fantasy managers should expect him to remain one of the few workhorses in the NFL again in 2021.
Dalvin Cook 2020 Outlook
Assuming his contract issues are resolved before the season opens, Cook will remain the centerpiece of the Vikings' offense. And with Gary Kubiak taking over the OC role, the expectations for Cook in 2020 will only rise -- with the RB himself leading the charge. "Two thousand yards," Cook said in March. "We could go like a 1,500 [rushing] and a 500 [receiving]. 1,500, 500. Or, 1,400, 600!" Christian McCaffrey was the only player to hit a combined 2,000 scrimmage yards last year with his 1,000/1,000 season. Still, Cook compiled 1,135 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 250 attempts and added 519 receiving yards on 53 catches in 14 games last season. Not only did the RB sit out the final two weeks, he also had fewer than 12 carries in three of the final four games he played. Despite the missed time, Cook ranked second behind McCaffrey among running backs in fantasy points per game (20.9). He was also second in top-5 finishes -- seven times out of 14 games. Had Cook not hurt his shoulder, he would have approached that 1,500, 500 benchmark and now with Kubiak fully in charge, expect Cook's workload to remain sky-high. If he stays healthy (and doesn't miss time to a holdout), those 2,000 yards are within reach.
