Kirk Cousins 2022 Outlook
Cousins is staying put in Minnesota through at least 2023 after the Vikings signed him to a one-year, $35 million fully guaranteed extension in March. The deal also has a no-trade clause. Minnesota hired a new head coach, Kevin O'Connell, and general manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, this offseason after having tried and failed for the last five years to win a Super Bowl. And, as Bleacher Report's Joseph Zucker pointed out, nobody has better symbolized the Vikings' inability to get over the hump than Cousins. He was supposed to be the final piece for a squad that won 13 games and reached the conference championship in 2017. Instead, the three-time Pro Bowler has presided over just one trip to the postseason since. That said, Zucker conceded Cousins isn't a bad quarterback. He threw for 4,221 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2021. But the 33-year-old failed to make meaningful improvement with the Vikings despite having a supporting cast that included Adam Thielen, Dalvin Cook, Stefon Diggs and then Justin Jefferson in Diggs' place. Despite the lack of high-end production, Cousins has been a more than serviceable fantasy play. Beyond the QB himself, having a solid -- even if unspectacular -- Cousins under center ensures our views of Jefferson, Thielen, Cook and Irv Smith Jr. and their ability to produce at past levels remain unchanged while their presence ensures Cousins remains strong QB2 with week-to-week QB1 upside.
Kirk Cousins 2021 Outlook
Cousins' durability has long been one of his best assets. It has allowed Washington, his former team, and Minnesota to avoid shelling out for an expensive veteran backup although Cousins is still one of the highest paid QBs in the NFL. Cousins, who threw a career-high 35 touchdowns last season, is set to make a guaranteed salary of $21 million during the 2021 season. And because he was on the roster on March 20, his $35 million base salary for the 2022 season became fully guaranteed as well. As VikingsTerritory.com noted, the best-paid NFL passers usually make deep playoff runs during a three-year sample size. To date, Cousins has not done that in Minneapolis. But it's hard to argue he hasn't been a serviceable and -- at times -- high-end producer (in fact, Pro Football Focus recently announced that Cousins earned their highest grade of any quarterback in the fourth quarter since 2019). With young superstars like Dalvin Cook and Justin Jefferson, a rising talent in Irv Smith Jr. and a strong veteran talent in Adam Thielen working alongside him, there's ample reason to believe Cousins will continue playing well enough to provide you occasional QB1 production at QB2 prices.
Kirk Cousins 2020 Outlook
Cousins had a slow start last season, but once he found his stride in Minnesota he produced some strong numbers. While he did next to nothing as a runner, Cousins tied Drew Brees for the sixth-most points per pass completion (0.78). Per NFL.com, he also tied Russell Wilson for the fifth-most points per pass attempt. Cousins also boasted a sterling 9:1 TD-to-INT ratio on deep passes, although NextGen Stat numbers reveal that Cousins' deep passes weren't all that risky as his receivers were open on 25.9 percent of deep pass attempts and posted an average target separation of 2.2 yards (despite Adam Thielen missing six games due to injury). This year, Cousins will be without Stefon Diggs, who was traded to Buffalo. The Vikings added former LSU receiver Justin Jefferson in the first round of April’s draft, but he's unlikely to be as good as Diggs. According to ESPN's Matthew Berry, throwing to Diggs in 2019, Cousins averaged 17.9 yards per completion and 12.2 YPA. To all other Vikings’ receivers, it was 10.2 yards per completion and 7.5 YPA. "Now, you can dink and dunk your way to being fantasy relevant," Berry wrote, "but Cousins was just 24th in pass attempts per game last season on a team that wants to continue to be run-heavy." Go ahead and view him as a solid QB2 heading into 2020.
