Matt Breida 2020 Outlook
Breida was a success story for the 49ers over the past three seasons. He was the 49ers' leading rusher in 2018 despite battling a lingering ankle issue most of the season. And after Tevin Coleman was injured in the first game last year, Breida picked up where he left off with games of 121 and 114 yards rushing over a three-game span. But he fell out of the rotation after missing three games with an ankle injury and was used sparingly down the stretch getting just 33 offensive snaps in the final three regular-season games and playoffs (he didn't get an offensive snap in the Super Bowl). And on Day 3 of the NFL draft, the Dolphins traded their fifth-round pick to San Francisco to secure his services. It's not hard to see the upside. In 43 games, he carried 381 times for 1,902 yards and six touchdowns. His 5.0 average is about as good as it gets. Breida's 67 catches makes for a 75.3 percent catch rate (89 targets) and an average of 8.4 yards per reception. He's converted 110 of his 448 touches into first downs. With 18 runs last year of 10 yards or more, Breida's big-run percentage was a whopping 14.6 percent. He's a model teammate. He quietly goes about his business. And now he'll join a committee currently headed by free-agent addition Jordan Howard.
Matt Breida 2019 Outlook
The 49ers will head into training camp with five RBs on the roster and a decision to make on who will get the bulk of the time in the backfield. However, HC Kyle Shanahan recently explained the decision won’t be his to make. Instead, it will be up to the players. "It's up to the players," Shanahan said. "They will define their roles. That's kind of what's unique about this." The team signed free agent Tevin Coleman to a two-year deal worth $8.5 million. Both Shanahan and GM John Lynch admitted that they weren't in the market for another back but it was too good of a deal to pass up. The team also expects Jerick McKinnon to be ready for the off-season program, but they won't rush him back as he recovers from his ACL injury. Breida, Jeff Wilson and special teams standout Raheem Mostert round out the group which is not at a loss for speed. So, while Breida isn't automatically ruled out of the starting conversation here, the more likely outcome is that he plays a secondary or even tertiary role in this offense. But should injury or attrition strike, Breida proved last season he is more than capable of holding down the starting assignment.
Matt Breida 2018 Outlook
Breida was a surprise last season, yet the 49ers were far from a good running team. Maybe that's why they let Carlos Hyde walk as a free agent this offseason and replaced him with former Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon. The fact that San Francisco made McKinnon the fourth-highest paid running back in the NFL suggests a major role for the newcomer. But does that mean he'll succeed in the lead role? Obviously the team’s investment means McKinnon will have a more-than ample opportunity to prove he's worthy. But don't overlook the fact that Breida is also a good fit for HC Kyle Shanahan's one-cut zone system and has proven to be capable of more than just spot reps. As Bleacher Report recently suggested, Breida isn't an explosive back, but he can be relied upon to make the correct reads and keep the offense ahead of the chains, which is highly valued by Shanahan. Joe Williams is also in the mix here, but Breida is clearly the first in line behind McKinnon.
