Following up on this week's
Team Notes. ... In the first practice of the Week 3 preparations, the Detroit Lions were without their top receiver.
Amon-Ra St. Brown did not practice on Wednesday as he deals with a toe injury suffered in the Week 2 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
St. Brown injured the toe during the game and left to have a metal plate inserted into his shoe. He did return, but the toe injury is problematic enough that Detroit's leading passing target was held out Wednesday, per head coach
Dan Campbell.
"He's day-to-day," Campbell said of St. Brown.
St. Brown has 12 receptions on 16 targets, netting 173 receiving yards. All are tops on the Lions through two games.
It's worth noting that the Lions passing offense ground to a halt in the joint practices against the Jacksonville Jaguars when St. Brown sat with a foot injury during the summer.
Meanwhile, left tackle Taylor Decker (ankle) and running back
David Montgomery (thigh) also missed the start of the practice week and their statuses are unknown heading into the Atlanta game.
That said, there's been ample reporting suggesting Montgomery will miss a game -- or even more.
Who on the Detroit Lions' offense will most benefit if Montgomery is out with his thigh injury?
Jahmyr Gibbs, the No. 12 overall pick is certainly in line to get a bigger workload without Montgomery after splitting carries in his first two games.
As ESPN.com's Eric Woodyard notes that Gibbs tallied 56 yards from scrimmage in the Week 2 loss to Seattle and 60 yards from scrimmage in his NFL debut at Kansas City as a dual threat, but he has showcased potential to be even better with more opportunities.
No Lions rookie running back rookie running back has logged 55 or more yards from scrimmage in each of the team's first two games of a season since
Kevin Smith in 2008, but Gibbs might be able to find a groove as the lead back still getting adjusted to the NFL.
The team also has veteran
Craig Reynolds on the roster and they promoted former Jet
Zonovan Knight from the practice squad on Wednesday.
Also worth noting. ...
Josh Reynolds, coming off a two-touchdown game against Seattle, opened the week limited by a groin issue. ...
With a Thursday night game against Green Bay lurking the following week -- and the four-day turnaround that comes with it -- Detroit could have some challenging decisions to make about who to sit/play against Atlanta, because there won't be much rest time heading into the first divisional matchup of the season.
