Following up on this week's
Team Notes. ... According to Akron Beacon Journal staffer Nate Ulrich,
Baker Mayfield hasn’t thrown a football since Sunday, when the Browns lost 20-13 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Yet the quarterback insisted after Wednesday’s practice he still expects to play Sunday when the Browns (5-7) host the Cincinnati Bengals (1-11).
So why is Mayfield confident he’ll be ready for game action despite his bruised throwing hand?
“Mama didn’t raise a wuss,” Mayfield replied, adding his ability to play will be all about pain tolerance.
Although Mayfield didn’t deliver a pass during Wednesday’s practice, he revealed he plans to resume throwing today.
“I’ll try and go [Thursday] for sure,” Mayfield said.
The No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft, Mayfield said the injury he suffered late in the second quarter against the Steelers when his right hand whacked the face mask of outside linebacker Bud Dupree is strictly a bruise.
“Yeah, from everything they evaluated, yeah, just a nice contusion, bruise, whatever you want to call it,” Mayfield said. ...
Meanwhile, wideouts
Odell Beckham Jr. (groin),
Jarvis Landry (hip) and
KhaDarel Hodge (Achilles) along with tight ends
Stephen Carlson (ankle) and
Demetrius Harris (shoulder) were all limited as well.
Running back
Dontrell Hilliard (knee) worked fully.
Beyond that, head coach Freddie Kitchens told reporters on Wednesday that
David Njoku (wrist) is "getting closer" to a return to the active roster.
"We just want to make sure he's ready to go," Kitchens added.
As CBSSports.com noted Njoku would be eligible to suit up against the Bengals on Sunday if activated to the 53-man roster, but the Browns have until Dec. 11 to make a decision on the 2017 first-round pick's health and could opt to take a cautious approach to his recovery. In order to have Njoku available for Week 14, Cleveland could wait until Saturday at the latest to add him to the active roster.
Stay tuned.
