David Njoku 2023 Outlook
Before Deshaun Watson came to town, Njoku was far and away one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2022 season at tight end. In the nine games he played without Watson under center, Njoku had 41 catches for 464 yards and two TDs. In the five games with Watson, Njoku went for 164 yards and two scores on 17 catches. Watson’s suspension likely had him out of rhythm, which could have led to the disparity. And maybe a full season with both players on the field translates to better numbers for Njoku. But still, it’s concerning to see that there was a drop in Njoku’s numbers when the Browns’ starting quarterback for the upcoming season was directing the offense. Cleveland also traded for former Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore, a talented slot option who found himself fading out of New York’s offense. Njoku is certainly starter material in any 10- or 12-man league, but just be prepared to watch the Browns’ offense run through Nick Chubb and Amari Cooper if Watson picks up from where he left off last season.
David Njoku 2022 Outlook
While Njoku has never had a breakout season in the NFL, all the pieces are in place. A first-round selection by the Browns in the 2017 NFL Draft, Njoku has totaled 148 receptions for 1,754 yards and 15 touchdowns through five seasons. His best season came in 2018, when he caught 56 passes for 639 yards and four touchdowns. That fairly pedestrian production didn't stop the Browns from paying up to keep him around. In fact, the team used their franchise tag to keep Njoku from hitting the open market. It's a bargain at just south of $11 million relative to the top of the market ($15 million per year). That said, the Browns and Njoku's agent have been in long-term negotiations on an extension. The hope is the tag is a place holder for an eventual deal. Previous reporting has suggested the Browns are more than willing to pay a premium here. Why? The Browns brought along Austin Hooper on a free-agent deal ahead of last season, but they ended that experiment by releasing Hooper, leaving Njoku and Harrison Bryant as their top two players at the position. It would appear their belief in Njoku's play-making ability and the addition of Deshaun Watson will be something they can leverage. That doesn't make Njoku a TE1 for fantasy purposes. But it does put him higher up on the TE2/streaming radar.
