Odell Beckham 2020 Outlook
Once again optimism reigns in Cleveland. While talented teammate and close friend Jarvis Landry had another Pro Bowl campaign in 2019, Beckham's highly-scrutinized productivity was among the lowest it has ever been in his six-season career during a full season. In fact, as NFL.com notes, Beckham averaged a career-low 12.6 fantasy points per game in his first season in Cleveland. He went from averaging 2.81 fantasy points per touch in his final season in New York to 2.61 points per touch in his first year in Cleveland. As a result, Beckham had just one top-5 finish among wideouts and ranked outside of the top 30 nine times. The good news? Beckham has seen what new HC Kevin Stefanski accomplished as OC in Minnesota, and is planning on replicating-- or perhaps even bettering -- the production of the Stefon Diggs-Adam Thielen combo. "I think that's the plan," Beckham said of matching the Vikings’ 2019 tandem, "and I'm hoping that that's the game plan." We know the talent is there. If the role and offense improve, the draft-day discount coming off a down season will obviously work in our favor.
Odell Beckham 2019 Outlook
As the Cleveland Plain Dealer framed it: "Beckham worked out with Browns QB Baker Mayfield and his longtime friend and former college teammate Jarvis Landry last offseason at USC, and now he'll get to do it for real." This after Beckham was traded to the Browns in a shocking move early in free agency. The Giants received a first-round pick in 2019 (No. 17 overall), the Browns' second third-round selection (No. 95) and safety Jabril Peppers in exchange for Beckham. In Cleveland, the three-time Pro Bowler will be reunited not only with Landry, his former LSU teammate who had been lobbying for Beckham since last summer, but with receivers coach Adam Henry, who coached him in college and with the Giants. The trade gives Mayfield a superstar No. 1 receiver, and gives Beckham a quarterback that can get him the ball anywhere on the field. According to ESPN's Matthew Berry, since he entered the league in 2014 among players with 315-plus catches, Beckham tops that list, scoring on 11.3 percent of his receptions. And don’t overlook the fact that Mayfield just broke the rookie passing touchdown record. This is going to work just fine for us.
Odell Beckham 2018 Outlook
Beckham missed 12 games last year with a broken left ankle, so he was sidelined for most of New York's awful season. This offseason, however, the focus has been more drama than injury related. Beckham is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie deal, and there has been strong speculation he will hold out during training camp. The 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Beckham has easily been the Giant’s best offensive weapon when healthy. In his first three seasons, he had 288 receptions for 4,122 yards and 35 touchdowns. His highlight-reel catches have wowed us all. But so have incidents such as an on-field feud with then-Panthers cornerback Josh Norman for which Beckham was suspended a game in December 2015 for egregious fouls. New HC Pat Shurmur indicated to the public that he will not coddle Beckham as predecessor Ben McAdoo did. All that said, effort and competing have never been a problem for the extremely productive, albeit often-too-emotional, Beckham. So fantasy owners need to focus on how dynamic, dangerous in the red zone and difficult to cover (anywhere on the field) he is. You should also consider Beckham's potential in an offense now featuring Saquon Barkley and Shurmur's play calling. Assuming he enters the year fully healthy, Beckham is locked in right behind the Antonio Brown-DeAndre Hopkins tier.
