Carson Wentz 2022 Outlook
Washington has started 32 quarterbacks since it last won the Super Bowl following the 1991 season, including starting eight in the past three seasons. This year, they'll start another after trading for Wentz, who will replace Taylor Heinicke. An MVP candidate with the Eagles before tearing his ACL late in the 2017 season, Wentz spent one season as the Colts' quarterback after Indianapolis gave the Eagles a first- and third-round pick for him in February 2021. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft, Wentz threw 27 touchdowns and tied his career low in interceptions with seven last season. But his long-term status with the Colts came into question late in the season when he struggled in the team's final two games where they had to win only one to make the playoffs. From a fantasy perspective, even with the late-season struggles, Wentz finished the year as QB14. Heinicke finished as QB20. Meanwhile, Michael Pittman Jr. finished inside the top 20 (WR18) with Wentz as his triggerman while Terry McLaurin came in at WR25. Beyond that, SI.com's Michael Fabiano believes Wentz should help the value of Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic and perhaps rookie Brian Robinson Jr. In 2021, Wentz ranked sixth among quarterbacks in terms of his percentage of passes to running backs (21.9). So there are pieces in place to keep Wentz relevant as a fantasy QB2.
Carson Wentz 2021 Outlook
After Wentz experienced a dismal 2020 season in which he was benched, the Colts traded a conditional first-round pick for the signal-caller, trusting coach Frank Reich can rekindle the QB's magic from 2017. Reich isn't the only man in the building with extensive experience working with Wentz. New Colts senior offensive assistant Press Taylor worked as the Eagles' QB coach alongside Wentz since the signal-caller entered the league in 2016. Taylor acknowledges that Indy brass approached him before trading for Wentz. "That was a no-brainer for me," Taylor said. "I absolutely believe in Carson Wentz as a player." If Wentz's goal was to join a team that believes in him unconditionally, he's done it. Now, Wentz must affirm that praise; otherwise, this offseason of encouragement will ring hollow in retrospect. Remember: when he last played for Reich in that 2017 season, Wentz looked like an MVP candidate. From a fantasy perspective, a coaching staff familiar with his strengths (and weaknesses), T.Y. Hilton's return working alongside talented youngsters like Michael Pittman Jr. and Parris Campbell, an equally solid crew at tight end, a potent rushing attack and a strong offensive line keep Wentz in viable QB2 territory.
Carson Wentz 2020 Outlook
As FantasyPros' Mike Tagliere noted, despite missing every starting wide receiver not named Nelson Agholor, Wentz was still able to throw for over 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2019, highlighting just how stable his floor is when healthy. Tagliere went on to note the Eagles rewarded Wentz by drafting three wide receivers, and trading for Marquise Goodwin. Meanwhile, after finishing third in the league in scoring in 2017, the Eagles slipped to 18th in 2018 and rebounded slightly to 12th last year. They dropped from seventh in total offense in ’17 to 14th the last two years. HC Doug Pederson has made it clear that he not only wants to get faster, but he also wants to find new ways to maximize that speed. Enter former 49ers’ QB coach Rich Scangarello who, according to Inquirer staffer Paul Domowitch, was brought in to “Shanahan-ize" the Eagles' offense. The newcomer will help Pederson incorporate some of the concepts from Kyle Shanahan's offense that finished second in scoring, fourth in total yards, second in rushing and fifth in third-down efficiency last season on its way to the Super Bowl. Scangarello is also expected to spend a lot of time in the quarterback room, which should be a positive for both Wentz and athletic rookie counterpart, Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts.
