Giovani Bernard 2020 Outlook
As 12up.com noted, the Bengals should have a pretty entertaining offense in Zac Taylor's second season in charge, as rookie quarterback Joe Burrow will be throwing the ball to the likes of A.J. Green and Tee Higgins while handing it off to Joe Mixon. So what about Bernard? Well. ... Even though he signed a two-year extension last September, the Bengals can save $2.8 million in cap space if they release him. While it's a reasonable contract for a solid backup, Bernard doesn't play special teams and didn't get many touches in 2019 (3.3 carries, 2.7 targets per game). As CBSSports.com notes, with Mixon capable of handling a three-down workload and presumably angling for a contract extension of his own, the Bengals could look to 2019 sixth-round draft picks Trayveon Williams and Rodney Anderson to fill the opening. (ESPN’s Matthew Berry reports the Bengals’ coaching staff is very high on Williams.) Moving forward with Burrow as the quarterback and Taylor as the head coach means that a lot of dead weight from the Marvin Lewis era needs to be cut loose. If Bernard is part of that exercise, his landing spot is worth watching. If he stays in Cincinnati, however, expecting more production than we saw last season seems like a reach.
Giovani Bernard 2019 Outlook
The Bengals selected two running backs in the sixth round of April's draft, Trayveon Williams and Rodney Anderson. Still, Bernard projects as the No. 2 tailback behind Joe Mixon on a crowded depth chart. The question is, what's the secondary role worth? Is it even a role at all? As Bleacher Report laid it out, incoming HC Zac Taylor spent two years with the Los Angeles Rams (2017-18) under Sean McVay, who featured Todd Gurley in a top-2 scoring offense over the last two terms. Gurley led the league in yards from scrimmage (3,924) and touchdowns (40) in that span. Like Gurley, Mixon can run and catch out of the backfield. He racked up 1,464 yards from scrimmage in 2018. If Taylor intends to carry some of the Rams' offensive principles to Cincinnati, he must force opponents to respect the ground attack. As the lead running back, Mixon could see a lot of carries at the beginning of games and drives to set up play-action designs. Furthermore, his pass-catching ability will also allow him to stay on the field for all three downs and see targets in the flat. Certainly, Bernard's workload would be limited under these circumstances. It would be limited even more if one of the rookies moves ahead of him. Pay attention during training camp if you’re planning to buy any Bengals RB not named Joe.
