Marvin Jones 2022 Outlook
Jones signed as a free agent with the Jaguars last spring after playing five seasons with the Detroit Lions. Jones was reunited with Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who held the same job with the Lions for two seasons before he arrived in Jacksonville. Jones handled a solid 21 percent target share during both campaigns and, despite the Jaguars' offensive struggles last year, has reeled off three consecutive top-35 fantasy seasons. His TDs took a dive last season (four, his lowest since 2016) despite being tied for second in the NFL with 15 end-zone targets. So, despite being 32 years old, he still has game. This year, Jones and off-season signing Christian Kirk figure to be Trevor Lawrence's top two targets in the new offense being installed by incoming head coach Doug Pederson. Behind them, it's up for grabs, as Laviska Shenault Jr. battling with the likes of Zay Jones and Laquon Treadwell as well as tight ends Evan Engram and Dan Arnold for targets. So, there will be competition for looks, but expecting Jones to continue being a significant contributor in an improved offense should keep the veteran on the fantasy radar. Not high on the radar. But definitely on it.
Marvin Jones 2021 Outlook
The Jaguars and Jones agreed to a two-year, $14.5 million deal (including $9.2 million fully guaranteed) in March. In Jacksonville, Jones will be reunited with former Lions offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who holds the same position on coach Urban Meyer's staff. ... The 31-year-old Jones flourished in his five seasons with the Lions after signing with the team as a free agent in 2016, following the retirement of Hall of Fame receiver Calvin Johnson. With the Lions, he had 289 catches for 4,296 yards and 36 touchdowns. He had his only 1,000-yard season in 2017, with 1,101 yards and an NFL-leading 18 yards per reception. As SI.com notes, Jones has been a high-volume touchdown receiver in his career, collecting 51 in 88 career starts. In fact, Jones is the only wide receiver with at least nine touchdown receptions in each of the past two years. Of course he has benefitted from being paired with other top receivers in his career such as A.J. Green and Kenny Golladay. In Jacksonville, he'll work alongside promising youngsters D.J. Chark, Laviska Shenault and Collin Johnson. Even if those names aren’t as prominent, in an offense that will likely be throwing on the regular, Jones should still be viewed as a value play with plenty of upside.
Marvin Jones 2020 Outlook
In an offseason of uncertainty, it's sometimes good to hear NFL players aren't distancing themselves from expectations for the upcoming campaign. Jones recently declared a big goal for the 2020 season. "I want to lead the league in -- I want over 15 touchdowns," Jones said. "I want (15). I want 1,400 (yards)." Entering the final year of his contract with the Lions, Jones' goal is lofty. Last season, Jones' teammate Kenny Golladay led the NFL with 11 touchdowns. Only two players since 2012 have compiled 15 touchdowns: Antonio Brown (15 in 2018) and Dez Bryant (16 in 2014). Former Lions receiver Calvin Johnson blasted past the plateau once, 16 in 2011. In NFL history, 33 players have earned 15 or more touchdowns in a season, with Randy Moss' 23 in 2007 breaking the record held by Jerry Rice (22 in 1987). Despite missing three games and playing with backup quarterbacks the second half of the season, Jones managed to put up nine TDs and 779 yards in 2019. Four of his touchdowns came in one game (against Minnesota), the second time he's accomplished the feat in his career. Still, if Matthew Stafford stays healthy, the 30-year-old Jones believes 15 TD receptions are attainable. And fantasy managers paying WR4 prices to land him will be rooting for all that.
