The Facts: The Jaguars targeted Jones in free agency because of his ability to exploit holes in a team's defensive coverage. In two seasons with the Detroit Lions, when Darrell Bevell was their offensive coordinator, Jones caught 18 touchdowns and averaged more than 12.5 yards per catch. Bevell is now in Jacksonville, serving as the Jaguars' offensive coordinator under Coach Urban Meyer, and their expectations for Jones are clear. They expected him to be the playmaker and much-needed leader for the receivers group that includes young emerging stars D.J. Chark and Laviska Shenault. Signing a two-year, $14.5 million free-agent contract last week, Jones has embraced both the job and expectations. "It feels good because obviously, I'm still playing at the top of my game," said Jones. "I've been doing this a long time at a high level."
Diehards Line:
At 31, Jones, who caught 76 passes for 978 yards and nine touchdowns last season for Detroi is now the team's oldest receiver, has caught 423 career passes for 6,025 yards and 51 touchdowns in eight seasons that included five with the Lions after starting his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals. "I think everywhere I've been, every stop I've made, I've been a leader. That's not necessarily saying that I'm going to be the one talking all the time. I like to show and you see that I'm a leader on and off the field."
