Andrew Luck 2018 Outlook
The Colts have been steadfast about their confidence in Luck's return to action this season, but his extended layoff has not created the same feeling in other corners of the football world. Nor should it after Luck missed a large chunk of 2016 and the entire 2017 season with the lingering shoulder injury to his throwing arm. The good news? The QB was on the field when Indianapolis kicked off its voluntary mini-camp in April. The bad news? Luck did not throw (or even catch) during warmups as he continues to rehab that troublesome shoulder. Despite still not throwing NFL-sized footballs, he maintains that his recovery process is moving along well. "If I wasn't making progress, it would freak me out and we would have to change something," Luck said. "But I am." While there is still no timetable for his return to throwing, Luck is optimistic he will enter training camp without any limitations. GM Chris Ballard believes "we'll be ready to roll come training camp" -- the same position he held last summer. The Colts loaded up on their offensive line and skill positions this offseason, so don’t dismiss Luck out of hand. Just realize that until we see actual evidence that he is ready to play at his previous level, counting on him to helm your fantasy squad is a gamble.
Andrew Luck 2017 Outlook
Although it's not clear he'll get in a full training camp, all indications are Luck will be ready for the start of the 2017 season after successful surgery performed in January to repair an issue in his right shoulder which had lingered from 2015. The goal of the surgery was for Luck to not be limited in practice anymore -- as he seemingly was on a weekly basis throughout the 2016 season. As a result, he missed all the team's off-season work and claimed in the middle of June that his availability for the start of training camp is unclear. As NFL.com noted, Luck has been one of the most battered quarterbacks in the NFL since he entered the league. Still, he had a strong statistical season last year after missing most of 2015 with injuries. He wound up completing 346 of 545 passes (63.4 percent) for 4,240 yards, with 31 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions while posting a 96.4 passer rating. All of this despite the tender shoulder. His latest recovery will be something to watch through August -- along with continued development of the offensive line that started to show improvement as 2016 wound down. There's certainly sufficient receiving firepower on hand for Luck to excel if things fall into place.
Andrew Luck 2016 Outlook
Luck is coming off the worst season of his four-year NFL career. He threw 15 touchdowns and committed 13 turnovers in just seven games. He missed nine games due to rib, shoulder, kidney and abdominal injuries. But recent reports indicate Luck is progressing well as he recovers from the lacerated kidney that ended his season. Colts LT Anthony Castonzo said in March that Luck was already back working hard in his off-season program at team headquarters. "He's extremely optimistic about the whole thing, as is his nature, and is just working tirelessly to try and get back," Castonzo said. Remember, Luck hasn't played football since last November. The good news? That kept him from taking two more months of hits from defenders. Now that the internal injury appears to be behind him, Luck should have a jump on preparing for this season. "He's able to get his offseason started early because he didn't have the wear-and-tear from the last half of the season so he's good to go," Castonzo noted. And that's good news for owners who will certainly benefit from a lower than usual price tag given Luck's disappointing 2015 campaign.
