LeSean McCoy 2019 Outlook
A subpar contingent of skill players and an ineffective front five were of no help to McCoy in 2018 as the once-impressive runner was limited to a career-worst 514 yards compiled at a lowly 3.2 yards per carry. But make no mistake, some responsibility for that decline appeared to be on the veteran ball carrier himself. As a result of all that, it was rookie QB Josh Allen who led the team in rushing yards on the season. In fact, from Week 12 on, Allen accounted for more than 53 percent of the team's rushing yards. If all that wasn't enough of a concern, the Bills added running backs Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon via free agency and drafted Devin Singletary, leaving open the possibility that McCoy isn’t even in the team's 2019 plans. Remember, Buffalo's $13.2 million investment in its backfield ranks second league-wide (except, as NFL.com suggested, "minus the putrid results"). Positives? The Bills made every effort to improve their offensive balance with a focus on adding talent at wideout and on the offensive line. Bottom line? With so many questions, banking on a McCoy rebound is a fool's errand, although what's likely to be his plummeting ADP might be worth watching as the season draws near.
LeSean McCoy 2018 Outlook
McCoy turned 30 in July, but he remains the Bills' most dangerous player on offense. He had another excellent season as he finished fourth in the NFL in rushing yards and also led the Bills in pass receptions. What might be most impressive is that McCoy had to adapt to a new blocking scheme, and after a slow start to the season, he found his groove. Beyond his rushing skills, McCoy is also Buffalo's most consistent receiver, offering a dangerous option in the flat and able to run a full route tree when he motions to the slot. Bleacher Report's Doug Farrar writes, "It's a big statement to make, but McCoy is the NFL's best pure elusive runner since Barry Sanders, and despite his years in the league, there's no sign he's losing any of that capability." By the way, only seven players in NFL history had more scrimmage yards in their 20s than McCoy: Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk, LaDainian Tomlinson, Emmitt Smith, Edgerrin James, Jim Brown and Walter Payton. The fact that McCoy’s output continued to be strong as last season wore on will keep him high on the fantasy radar again, despite hitting that scary age-30 mark. Still, concerns at quarterback and an offensive line that lost three critical components are issues worth watching as the season draws near.
