Aaron Rodgers 2022 Outlook
Rodgers is returning to the Packers, and he won't be leaving anytime soon after signing a four-year contract extension that reportedly makes him the highest-paid player on an annual basis in NFL history. The reigning MVP will get $153 million guaranteed and his cap number will go down. This is a positive for fantasy managers as well as for the Packers, who have won 13 games each of the past three seasons. Last season, Rodgers broke Brett Favre's franchise record of 442 career touchdown passes, finishing the season with 449. Depending on how much longer he plays, Rodgers has a chance to break several of Favre's other records, including career passing yards. Rodgers' 2021 season also was marked by COVID-19 controversy, but he still had one of his most efficient seasons, with 37 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He missed one game because of his mandatory quarantine as an unvaccinated player. All that aside, Rodgers is heads into 2022 playing at the highest level. The concern for fantasy managers, however, will be his supporting cast. At the very least, Davante Adams' surprise trade to the Raiders -- a deal consummated shortly after the QB committed to returning -- means the Packers have some work to do. Again, the resulting uncertainty will create value; those trusting in Rodgers' ability to get the job done despite Adams' departure will benefit from the lower price.
Aaron Rodgers 2021 Outlook
Rodgers earned a third NFL MVP award following a season in which he led the league with a 121.5 passer rating, the second-best in NFL history. He threw 48 touchdowns and only five interceptions, and the Packers had an NFC-best 13-3 record. ... All of this after the Packers created a bit of a controversy by trading up in the 2020 NFL Draft to select Rodgers' eventual successor, Jordan Love. Of course, last year's drama ultimately paled in comparison to the developments on draft day this year, when multiple reports made it clear Rodgers was so unhappy with the club (and specifically GM Brian Gutekunst) he wanted to be traded and would consider retiring rather than playing another game for them -- a sentiment that has cooled down after the draft (even through Rodgers sat out the team's mandatory minicamp). ... Remember, Rodgers is the only quarterback in NFL history who has three seasons with 40-plus passing touchdowns. As FantasyPros notes, his 9.13 percent touchdown rate in 2020 ranks as the 11th-highest mark of all-time among quarterbacks who threw a minimum of 250 pass attempts. He had an interception rate of 0.95 percent. Now, with his top weapons -- Davante Adams, Aaron Jones and Robert Tonyan -- all returning, the only thing standing between Rodgers and high-end fantasy production is his status with the organization. You'll want to watch that closely.
Aaron Rodgers 2020 Outlook
One of the most-discussed moves of this year's draft was the Packers' decision to take quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick given they still have Rodgers on hand. Adding to the excitement, Green Bay also gave a fourth-round pick to the Dolphins in order to move up four spots to get Love. Given that investment, it's fair to wonder if the Packers know something that the rest of us don’t. The 37-year-old Rodgers plans to play into his 40s, which would cover Love's rookie contract, but GM Brian Gutekunst said it would "be great for the Packers" if the veteran plays well enough to keep the newcomer on the sideline. And that is totally likely; his pairing with Matt LaFleur produced 13 wins in 2019. But fantasy owners would appreciate it if Rodgers would pick up the pace a bit. He ranked 11th in points per pass completion but scored a mere 24.3 points via rushing attempts. It should also be noted that an injury to Davante Adams left a huge hole in the receiving corps for a quarter of the season. While he remains a viable QB1 in 2020, Rodger’s stock is clearly trending downward and you could end up landing him at an even better price than our ranking reflects.
