Dri Archer: The Next Big Thing from a Small School

Dri Archer is going to be an interesting prospect to watch leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft. Archer blew scouts away at the NFL Combine by running a 4.26 40-yard dash and showing his fluid athletic ability in the RB field drills. Archer is going to be compared to the likes of Darren Sproles, Danny Woodhead, Andre Ellington, and Dexter McCluster simply because he is a fast scat back type of RB that possess the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Archer stands 5-8 and weighs 173 lbs; which is similar to all the guys above who stand between 5’6 and 5’9 and all weigh between 170-200lbs. Archer fits these molds to the point and he easily faster than anyone listed above. Where he will get drafted is a whole different question, he would need to be drafted by a team that already has an every down back because his body just can’t take the beating of an every day starter for the NFL.

Ellington was drafted in the 6th round of the 2013 NFL Draft and he flourished in his role with the Cardinals, whomever drafts Archer should roll him out into a similar rookie playing time pattern as the Cardinals did with Ellington. Archer could really help out a team that needs a boost in the return game and he excels in catching the ball out of the backfield. Over his last two seasons at Kent State, Archer caught 64 passes for 888 yards to go with 8 receiving TDs. Get a guy like Archer into open space and get him 10-15 touches a game between rushing, receiving, and returning there is no way Archer can’t help out a middling offensive NFL team right now. Just to put a little ease into an NFL GMs mind about drafting a little prospect out of a small D1 school, the last Kent State pass catcher that was drafted was Julian Edelman in 2009 by the Patriots and he seems to be doing just fine.
