CINCINNATI BENGALS UPDATE

lHIGGINS RULED OUT AS BURROW HOPES FOR A BETTER ROUND 2 VS. RAVENS

Following up on this week's Team Notes. ... When the Bengals played the Ravens earlier this season, Joe Burrow was clearly still dealing with the calf injury he suffered early on in training camp.

Cincinnati got down 20-10 in the second half before Baltimore made it 27-17 early in the fourth quarter. Burrow there a touchdown to Tee Higgins with 3:28 left in the game, but the Ravens ran a successful four-minute drill and didn't give the ball back to win.

Burrow finished that contest 27-of-41 for 222 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Reflecting on that performance on Tuesday in advance of Thursday's matchup in Baltimore, Burrow said he "wasn't obviously feeling my best at that point."

"I didn't quite have my full toolbox in there," Burrow said, via Geoff Hobson of the team's website. "I thought we did some good things in the second half. The first half we didn't have a ton of plays. They did a good job."

The Ravens enter Week 11 leading the AFC North at 7-3 with a defense that's No. 1 in points allowed and No. 2 in yards allowed.

"We found some explosives in the second half [of the first matchup]," Burrow said. "That's what we have to try to do. They do a great job of limiting those explosive plays and you have to try to find them, because they're going to do a really good job on offense keeping the ball, running it, and scoring points.

"We're going to have to do the same."

And they'll have to do it without Higgins, who will miss his second straight game as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury.

He did not practice all week and was ruled out on the game status report that was issued Wednesday.

The fourth-year player out Clemson did not play in the team's Week 10 loss to the Texans after he suffered the injury on Nov. 8 at practice. Earlier in the week, head coach Zac Taylor said the tight turnaround presented a big challenge for Higgins and defensive end Sam Hubbard to face Baltimore.

Hubbard, who didn't practice all week with an ankle injury, is also out for Thursday's game.

Cincinnati is also without wide receiver Andrei Iosivas. The sixth-round draft pick out Princeton has been absent all week with a knee injury. Two of the rookie's four catches have been for touchdowns.

That leaves Cincinnati without extra depth in the wake of Higgins' prolonged absence.

As ESPN.com's Ben Baby notes, after a slow start to the season, Higgins had his best game in a Week 9 win over the Bills, where he caught eight of nine targets for 110 yards. His other notable game came in Week 2 against Baltimore, when he had eight catches for 89 yards and both of his touchdowns on the season.

Earlier in the week, wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase said that any one-on-one matchups were limited with Higgins not playing in the 30-27 loss to Houston.

"All they were doing was playing their No. 1 corner against our No. 2 receiver and doubling me," Chase said.

Worth noting, Tyler Boyd earned a season-high in targets (12) with Higgins sidelined last Sunday.

Trenton Irwin also saw an increased workload.

As NBC Sports' Kyle Dvorchak notes, before Week 10, Boyd's season-high in targets was nine all the way back in Week 3. Higgins recorded season-lows in routes in Weeks 4 and 6 because of a rib injury. He missed Week 5 with the issue and was out again last week because of a hamstring injury.

Boyd averaged 8.3 targets per game in those games. He has earned 5.6 targets per week in all other games.

The Bengals (5-4) are going up against a 7-3 Baltimore team that leads the NFL in fewest points allowed per drive. Offensive coordinator Brian Callahan acknowledged the stakes facing Cincinnati on Thursday night.

"It's going to be a battle," Callahan said this week. "There's a lot on the line for these games coming up. I think it feels like a playoff game in November."

Cincinnati did receive some good news.

Defensive end Trey Hendrickson, the team's leading pass-rusher who suffered a knee injury against Houston, will play against Baltimore.

Hendrickson will go against a backup for the Ravens at left tackle. The Ravens ruled out Ronnie Stanley (knee) after he didn't practice all week, which means Patrick Mekari will start in his place.

Baltimore also listed Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey (calf) as doubtful. Veteran journeyman Rock Ya-Sin is expected to replace him.
