Tee Higgins 2023 Outlook
Higgins has produced back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and has Joe Burrow throwing passes to him so there's a lot to like. The task is figuring out if he's on the verge of a 90-catch season or if he will remain where he's been through his first three seasons -- 67 to 74 per year. Higgins also prospers when defenses gang up on lead receiver Ja'Marr Chase with double teams, and he is adept at adjusting his patterns when he's the one with single coverage. He also makes the key catches with 152 of his 215 career receptions going for first downs. Higgins has yet to produce a high number of touchdown catches but has 19 in 46 career games. He topped 100 receiving yards four times last season with a high of 148. In fact, he averaged at least 16 yards per catch in each of his 100-yard outings. On the down side, Higgins had 35 or fewer yards on four occasions. Partly because of his dependability to get first downs, he had five or more catches 10 times last season.
Tee Higgins 2022 Outlook
Higgins suffered a shoulder injury early in the 2021 season but put off surgery until March, helping the Bengals reach the Super Bowl before falling to the Los Angeles Rams. The young wideout told Geoff Hobson of the team's official website in mid-April that he plans to be ready for the start of training camp. "That's the plan," Higgins said of being healthy for camp. ... Higgins suffered the shoulder injury in Week 2, missing the next two games. As NFL.com suggested, the injury provides impressive context to the receiver's first career 1,000-yard season. Despite missing the two contests, the 23-year-old netted 1,091 yards and six TDs on 74 catches. Had the Bengals hung onto their fourth-quarter Super Bowl lead, Higgins might have been named MVP of the contest with his 100 yards and two TDs. ... While Ja'Marr Chase's record-setting rookie campaign overshadowed Higgins' play, the Clemson product has developed into a dangerous threat in his own right. In fact, it's fair to say the Bengals' trio of Higgins, Chase and Tyler Boyd given them one of the top units in the league. Each member of this threesome perfectly complements the others and adds to their respective effectiveness. With Higgins in line to be healthy for camp, a Year 3 bump in production isn't out of the question in an explosive Bengals offense.
Tee Higgins 2021 Outlook
According to SBNation's Dadio Makdook, "Regardless of whether the Bengals select Ja'Marr Chase in the first round [they did], they could have a true star at wideout (this) year. ..." And that star could be Higgins. ESPN.com's Ben Baby backed that contention, explaining it as follows: "I think Tee has the potential to be a WR1. I thought he looked really good, and the thing is: He is really young. I talked to his old position coach at Clemson. I remember he told me right after the Bengals drafted him, they said, 'His rookie year is not going to be anything like his second year, because he's still so raw athletically.' So he's really going to come into his own in 2021. So this is going to be Higgins' breakout year. ..." As for concerns about Chase being a limiting factor, Baby pointed to A.J. Green's 104 targets from last year which will need to be replaced with Green moving on to Arizona this offseason. Moreso, almost 45 percent of those targets (46) came in just four combined games early in the season. Even if the heralded rookie steps in and grabs 100-plus targets, there’s no reason to believe Higgins won't still get sufficient work to have the hoped-for breakout.
