Tyler Boyd 2023 Outlook
Is this a turning point kind of season for Boyd with the Bengals? The veteran enters his seventh season with the franchise as a known and dependable commodity in an offense well-stocked with playmakers. Still, he hasn’t registered a 1,000-yard season since doing so in both 2018 and 2019. Boyd’s targets have dwindled by at least 11 per season in each campaign since ’19, but he still has remained healthy, playing 47 games over that three-season span. Boyd still showed his big-play prowess a season ago, surpassing the 100-yard mark in two games and having a long reception of at least 43 yards three times. The key figures to be avoiding too great a drop off from game to game, even when defenses are keying on him. One week after an eight-catch, 155 catch effort against Atlanta, Boyd had three catches for 38 yards at Cleveland. He scored touchdowns in both games as the Bengals won the AFC North and made a playoff run to the conference championship game.
Tyler Boyd 2022 Outlook
It's no surprise that Ja'Marr Chase garnered most of the attention on his way to AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. He certainly overshadowed Tee Higgins and Boyd, but both have their roles in this offense. In the case of Higgins, it's a role with considerable fantasy relevance. For Boyd? Not as much. ... Boyd, who views himself as the "best slot receiver in the league," buoyed the Bengals' offense before their 2021 resurgence. Boyd, who has been with Cincinnati for six seasons, led the Bengals in receiving yards in 2018 and 2019, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark in each of those seasons. But, as NFL.com suggested, he's taken a proverbial back seat since Higgins and Chase have arrived. That said, Boyd still provides Joe Burrow with a reliable target, he had zero drops last season, can deliver spike performances any given week -- he had four games of 85-plus yards in 2021. But always in fantasy, volume matters. So, the fact that Boyd was limited to a 18.6 percent target share (compared to 22 percent in 2020) and a 15 percent target rate per route run was an issue. According to FantasyPros, the target rate per route ranked last among 73 qualifying players with at least 100 targets last season. Even at that, Boyd finished the season in low-end WR3 territory. Fantasy managers could do worse than having Boyd for depth and as a bye-week fill in.
Tyler Boyd 2021 Outlook
It's not hard to find observers who believe Ja'Marr Chase will actually improve the lives of Cincinnati's other two starting receivers. As SBNation.com explained, when Chase, Boyd and Tee Higgins are all on the field, one of the three will have an advantageous matchup against any secondary they face. Chase will also force defenses to respect what the Bengals want to do vertically, and that in itself creates more space for the entire offense. Boyd is one of the best slot receivers in the game, and the presence of Chase will help him thrive in that role. Adding to the positive vibes, RotoBaller.com's Adam Koffler pointed out that Burrow attempted 40.4 passes during the 10 games he played his rookie season. Only the Steelers attempted more passes per game (42.6) in 2020, so there will be plenty of targets to go around for all three receivers in Cincinnati. Koffler believes 125-plus targets is a reasonable expectation for Boyd this season, which makes him a safe option in PPR leagues as a high-end WR3. "Temper expectations in non-PPR and half-PPR leagues, however," Koffler added, "as Boyd has just 16 total touchdowns in his last three seasons."
