Tevin Coleman 2021 Outlook
Addressing their thin backfield, the Jets agreed to terms with Coleman on a one-year contract that can be worth up to $2 million. They also drafted North Carolina's Michael Carter in the fourth round of April's draft. Coleman will be reunited with Jets coach Robert Saleh and several former 49ers assistants. The Jets plan to run the 49ers' offense under coordinator Mike LaFleur, one of those former San Francisco assistants, so Coleman will be familiar with the scheme. Beyond that, Coleman knows his dismal, injury-ravaged 2020 campaign doesn't inspire confidence that he will bounce back with the New York Jets. But the running back believes he has plenty to offer his new club. "I'm a fast guy, I'm a strong guy, I'm big," Coleman said in June. "So I've definitely got a lot in my tank to prove myself." In addition to Coleman and Carter, the Jets backfield includes La'Mical Perine, Ty Johnson and Josh Adams. Coleman has a chance to earn a big load share if he remains healthy and displays the burst that made his career in Atlanta. Carter might be his biggest competition if the rookie catches on quickly, but thinking Coleman opens the season in a lead role isn't a reach.
