Tom Brady 2022 Outlook
Just 44 days after his retirement from football, Brady announced he would return to play for his 23rd season -- and that he would do it with the Bucs. "These past two months I've realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it's not now," Brady wrote. "I'm coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. ..." Brady led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title following the 2020 season and NFC South championship last season. He teamed with coach Bill Belichick to win six Super Bowls during 20 seasons with the Patriots. Brady led the NFL in yards passing (5,316), touchdowns (43), completions (485) and attempts (719) in 2021, but the Buccaneers lost at home to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round. While head coach Bruce Arians subsequently stepped aside, handing the reins to defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Brady and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich were primarily responsible for game-planning and play calling last season. Throw in the returns of Leonard Fournette, Giovani Bernard and Ryan Jensen, the addition of Russell Gage to help cover for the loss of Antonio Brown and getting Chris Godwin signed to a long-term deal, and most all of the pieces are in place. Still unresolved? Rob Gronkowski has yet to decide if he's re-signing with the Bucs (or anybody for that matter), but expecting a major slowdown for Brady or this offense seems unlikely.
Tom Brady 2021 Outlook
As USA Today put it, "After his performance in 2020, there shouldn't be any more doubters left for Brady. ..." As he headed into his 21st NFL season (at 43 years old) after signing a two-year deal with the Bucs, the few doubters that remained were likely those who questioned his ability to still throw the deep ball. Brady responded by leading the Bucs to a victory in Super Bowl LV, while proving he can still throw deep with the best of them. In fact, no other quarterback in the NFL threw more deep passes in 2020 than Brady. According to FantasyPros.com, Brady spun a league-high 91 deep balls in 2020, which was 13 more than the next-closest quarterback. He was successful enough on those attempts, too, finishing third among quarterbacks with 63 plays of 20-plus yards through the air. Only Deshaun Watson (69) and Patrick Mahomes (67) had more. In addition to keeping most of their top free agents on board (specifically Chris Godwin, Rob Gronkowski and Leonard Fournette), the addition of receiving back Giovani Bernard offers additional firepower. Add it all up, and a sudden and significant drop-off, while possible, appears to fall on the "least likely" end of the range of outcomes.
