Kenneth Walker III 2023 Outlook
Walker -- whom we maintain was robbed of a Heisman Trophy finalist position in 2021 at Michigan State -- took his frustrations out on NFL opponents in 2022, his angry running style an immediate fit on Sundays. Any notion of a timeshare between him and Rashaad Penny was dispelled, and Penny left town in free agency after Walker put up big numbers in just 15 of a possible 17 games. For years, the conventional knock on Pete Carroll’s Seahawks has been an over reliance on the run game, which to some was a stuck-in-his-ways, old-school mindset. In reality, the Seahawks had more rushing attempts in 2022 than in the two prior seasons (the long-forgotten “Let Russ Cook” era), when they ranked near the bottom of the league in the category. We’ve learned that Geno Smith can still air the ball out, but expect plenty of opportunities for Walker to show off his stuff. The only thing is, Walker will have to share those opportunities. The Seahawks picked a running back in the second round for the second straight year, adding Zach Charbonnet from UCLA to form a thunder-and-lightning tandem.
Kenneth Walker III 2022 Outlook
While some were surprised to see this landing spot for Walker, ESPN.com's Brady Henderson contends that running back was a bigger need than you might realize given Rashaad Penny's long injury history and the uncertainty with Chris Carson coming off neck surgery. "It's a volatile spot, guys get banged up, and with the way we ask our guys to run, we need rotations," head coach Pete Carroll explained after the draft. "We like playing multiple guys and we don't have any problem with that at all. I'm fine about going with who is hot, but also, we have to find a way to keep our guys healthy. That's why the rotation is so important, so we don't overwork them, particularly early in the year. ..." Taking a running back this early would seem to suggest some concern on Seattle's part about Carson coming back to full strength. With a compact build and powerful style, Walker looks like an early-down option. He's also got elite speed, running a 4.38-second 40 at the Scouting Combine, which certainly helped his draft stock. Walker finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting last season after rushing for 1,636 yards and 18 touchdowns. He caught 19 passes in three seasons, so it's fair to wonder how much he'll factor into the passing game, but expecting him to push Penny for a between-the-tackles role is well within the range of possible outcomes here.
