Breece Hall 2023 Outlook
The New York Jets’ draft class in 2022 was so loaded that not only did they sweep the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards, they might have had another contender for OROY in Hall if not for injury. (Pause here to reflect on the historical rarity of the Jets drafting this well, the new world we live in where Aaron Rodgers pledges allegiance to Gang Green and how much closer we are to hell freezing over.) In Weeks 4-7 of his rookie season, Hall had a rushing touchdown in every game, averaged 87.8 rushing yards per contest and posted one 100-yard receiving game to boot. That was the last we saw of him, as he tore his ACL and meniscus in Week 7, and the Jets’ rushing attack was never the same with Michael Carter in the starting role. Carter, Zonovan Knight and newly-drafted Israel Abanikanda may battle for backup carries, but none of them hold a candle to Hall’s breakaway speed. Now, having Rodgers in charge of the offense will only serve to open up the running game as defenses must respect the pass more than when Zach Wilson was under center.
Breece Hall 2022 Outlook
Hall was the first running back selected, characterized by ESPN.com's Rich Cimini as "an ultra-productive player" who blew up the Scouting Combine with a 4.39 in the 40. The Jets traded up two spots to pick him. The question: Did they need to take a running back this high, especially after a promising rookie year by Michael Carter? "I think I can come in and complement (Carter) really well," Hall said. He could also come in and serve as the primary back with Carter being the change of pace -- an outcome that seems far more likely than Hall complementing Carter. Hall described himself as "a three-down back, a guy who can catch the ball, make people miss and run you over." Cimini went on to point out Hall put up crazy numbers in college, rushing for 1,572 and 1,472 yards in each of his last two seasons. And of great interest to fantasy managers, he was a touchdown machine -- 41 rushing touchdowns in 2020 and 2021. He set an FBS record by rushing for at least one touchdown in 24 straight games. Some evaluators say he doesn't always play up to his speed, but he's been extremely reliable. Hall paced all Division I running backs -- FBS and FCS -- with 800 offensive touches over the last three seasons and 591 over the last two. Oh, and he didn't fumble the ball during his time with the Cyclones. Consider him this offense's RB1 until further notice.
