Travis Etienne Jr. 2023 Outlook
Etienne’s 2021 pre-season Lisfranc injury was an ill-timed but temporary obstacle on his way to a star turn in the NFL. (If anything, Etienne got to sit out that whole embarrassing Urban Meyer year in North Florida.) Etienne eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in his first season of action and did enough to convince the Jaguars to move on from James Robinson, who was competing for time in the backfield. Etienne’s season was very boom or bust. He cracked 100 yards in a game five times. ... And failed to crack 40 yards five times while tying for the NFL lead with four 40-yard-plus gains (Justin Fields, Derrick Henry). He was given a pretty hefty workload in the red zone, with 40 touches, but he had five total touchdowns, four of which came in one three-week span. If you aren’t worried about rookie Tank Bigsby, holdover JaMycal Hasty or new signing D’Ernest Johnson working into the backfield rotation, Etienne can project as your fantasy team’s RB1. Remember that big-play ability he flashed at Clemson and the built-in chemistry with former college teammate Trevor Lawrence. Etienne’s ceiling remains high.
Travis Etienne Jr. 2022 Outlook
A Lisfranc injury in the second pre-season game knocked Etienne, a first-round pick, out for the entire 2021 season and it turned out to be an omen for what would happen over the rest of the Jaguars' season. The team opened 2-11 under first-year coach Urban Meyer before firing him after a string of embarrassing incidents made it seem he was neither interested in nor equipped to handle a job at the professional level. Etienne said in March that he learned a lot of "what to do, what not to do" while watching the year play out and laughed when a reporter asked if he was happy to be somewhat removed from the madness that went on under Meyer. "Definitely, that's just the human element of it. Just seeing the results, you're definitely like, 'If there was any year to miss, I missed a great one,'" Etienne said. Meanwhile, the speedy back also told reporters he's 85-90 percent back from his injury and that he began feeling like himself in the last couple of weeks of March. The Jags' offense is in desperate need of speed, which the first-round pick provides if healthy. But will the new coaching staff have the same designs as Urban Meyer's for the all-purpose threat? Regardless, a return to full health and a competent coaching staff offer ample reason to take a chance on Etienne at the rice price, especially with James Robinson's return from a partially torn Achilles still unclear.
Travis Etienne Jr. 2021 Outlook
With their second first-round pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jaguars went back to the Clemson well, landing Etienne with the 25th overall pick. Pairing Trevor Lawrence, their choice at No. 1 overall, with Etienne marked the first time in the Common Draft era that a QB and RB from the same school were selected in the first round of the same draft by the same team. A home-run hitter, Etienne is the draft's best pass-catching back, but he can also run. Etienne had 2,571 rush yards after contact over the last three seasons (most in FBS), per Pro Football Focus. He also forced 187 missed tackles on rushes over the previous three seasons (most in FBS). The speedster is a perfect outlet for Lawrence and can excel in the screen game. Etienne pairs well with James Robinson, who shined last year as a between-the-tackles runner. The duo can both break tackles on the second level, which should help quickly turn around the Jags' offense. Incoming coach Urban Meyer called Etienne a "matchup issue" who can help the team as a runner and a receiver. His relationship with Lawrence may help him get a few more looks in the latter role once the team hits the field this year.
