The Facts: The chatter after the Jaguars made the former Clemson running back their second first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft was how Etienne could be used more as a wide receiver than a tailback. Then Etienne suffered a Lisfranc injury in the preseason, which derailed his entire rookie campaign. It appears new Jaguars coach Doug Pederson will push Etienne back -- primarily (and sensibly) -- to his natural position. It seems wise to use Etienne as a running back considering he rushed for nearly 5,000 yards and 70 touchdowns in his four years at Clemson. Could the Jaguars use him in a Deebo Samuel/Alvin Kamara-type role? “We’ll take the success those guys have had no matter who it is, whether it’s Travis or any of those guys,” OC Press Taylor said in June. “I think it’s kind of going to be a case-by-case basis.”
Diehards Line:
Etienne said he’s trying to emulate Samuel this offseason. But as The Athletic's Larry Holder suggests, Etienne seems more suited to play like Kamara with Jacksonville using Etienne as a running back first and receiver second. Kamara played his best, though, without such a heavy load as a runner. Kamara rushed the ball a career-high 240 times in only 13 games last season. He was only targeted 67 times in the passing game. The sweet spot for a player like Kamara would be 180 carries and 100 targets as a receiver. Even after the foot injury, Etienne seems capable of pulling off a Kamara-type distribution. Because of Etienne’s potential as a receiver, you’d have to imagine he’ll have more fantasy value than James Robinson. It will come down to whether the Jaguars are willing to limit Robinson’s touches enough to allow Etienne to grow like Kamara. It also will come down to whether the Jaguars can become a semi-consistent team offensively. But a healthy Etienne should certainly help.
