Antonio Gibson 2023 Outlook
Brian Robinson Jr. handily out gained teammate Gibson in 2022 despite playing three fewer games. Neither running back’s yards per carry looked all that appetizing, though there’s hope in Washington that the Commanders have upgraded that offensive line. Gibson’s fantasy production has dropped off steadily after he scored 11 touchdowns as a rookie in 2020. Introducing Robinson into the fold last year -- and adding Chris Rodriguez Jr. in the sixth round of the draft this year -- doesn’t help Gibson’s outlook in his fourth NFL campaign. Here’s what stabilizes his value in fantasy, though: the passing game. Gibson’s targets have increased year by year, and new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy may want to capitalize on his value as a pass-catcher. Bieniemy may not have been calling the plays with the Kansas City Chiefs, but you better believe his fingerprints were on that offense. Running back Jerick McKinnon was targeted 71 times in 2022; the year before that, they had Darrel Williams targeted 57 times. And if Sam Howell is really going to be the starting quarterback, short passes to Gibson will be his friend as he settles into that role.
Antonio Gibson 2022 Outlook
Handed the lion's share of the workload last season, Gibson, running through nagging injuries, averaged 4.0 yards per carry, 3.1 yards after contact and was stuffed 45 times. He generated fewer than 55 rush yards in seven of 16 games and broke the century mark just twice. That said, Gibson's sophomore season was far from a disaster as he missed only one game and ran for over 1,000 yards, caught 42 passes, and scored 10 touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Commanders convinced pass-catching running back J.D. McKissic to pass up on an agreement with the Bills to return to D.C. The move kept the tandem of Gibson and McKissic together for two more seasons. Is that the best news for those investing in the starter? Gibson is a natural pass catcher and has ability to play all three downs as both a runner and receiver even if the Commanders haven't used him that way. "I feel like that's part of my game," Gibson said. "I'm versatile. It's just perfecting those techniques, getting my receiver game back down. ..." With new quarterback Carson Wentz's struggles last year in Indy, expect Washington to come out of the gate leaning on both Gibson and McKissic as runners and receivers out of the backfield. While the selection of Brian Robinson Jr. muddies the waters a bit more, expecting another solid season for Gibson seems reasonable, even if his ceiling is capped.
Antonio Gibson 2021 Outlook
Gibson's breakout game last Thanksgiving Day was a clear statement. He amassed 115 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns against the Cowboys in Dallas. By the time Washington walked away with a blowout win, no one could deny that Gibson has a bright future in this league. Remember, Gibson mostly played receiver in college, so he first had to learn the basics of the position. After that, it was a matter of putting the concepts and techniques -- which had to be learned virtually during the pandemic offseason -- to proper use on the field. RBs coach Randy Jordan referred to Gibson and his potential as "clay" during training camp, and if that's the case, his finished product seems to be least taking shape and solidifying in the furnace after an impressive 11-TD rookie season. Had Gibson not been forced to miss two games with a turf toe injury, he may have become Washington's first 1,000-yard rusher since Adrian Peterson in 2018. Gibson, who participated in all the workouts open to the media this offseason and did not show obvious ill-effects from the aforementioned toe injury, remains a solid RB2 candidate for fantasy managers -- and perhaps one with RB1 upside.
