Jonathan Taylor 2022 Outlook
In just his second season, Taylor led the league in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and tied Chargers RB Austin Ekeler for the most scrimmage touchdowns with 20. Taylor also set a franchise record in Week 17 for most rushing yards by a Colts running back, surpassing both Eric Dickerson, who was second in franchise history with 1,659 yards in 1988 and James, who at the time held the record with 1,709 yards in 2000. Taylor also set the record for most touchdowns scored by a Colts player when he scored five touchdowns (four rushing, one receiving) in a 41-15 rout of the Bills in Week 11. It was these kinds of performances which also helped Taylor earn his first Pro Bowl selection, and it's also what will make him the most likely candidate to be the first overall pick in your fantasy draft this coming season. Concerns? While we all worry after any 300-plus carry season, Taylor has the power and speed to overcome the workload in back-to-back campaigns. As SI.com suggested, the hope is that Taylor maintains his dominant second-half rushing market share (94 percent in Weeks 10-17 vs. 74 percent in Weeks 1-9) and supports that with enough receiving production -- even with Nyheim Hines in the mix -- if the Colts run into negative game scripts.
Jonathan Taylor 2021 Outlook
It was a tale of two seasons for Taylor. As Si.com noted, in his first nine games in the NFL, the rookie averaged 15 touches, 11.9 fantasy points and wasn't even a top-20 fantasy running back. Over his final six games, Taylor averaged 22.3 touches and 24.3 fantasy points and ranked as the third-best running back in fantasy football. It was a strong finish, one that Colts.com's JJ Stankevitz interpreted to mean that Taylor is set to make a huge leap in Year 2. "You might be thinking," Stankevitz wrote, "wait, didn't Taylor finish third in the NFL with 1,169 rushing yards? And you're saying he can make a Year 2 leap?" That late-season, six-game fantasy run was built on 110 carries, 741 yards, eight total TDs. That's good for an average of 6.2 yards per carry. It's true that the Colts' backfield will be loaded in 2021 between Taylor, Marlon Mack, Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins, giving running backs coach Scottie Montgomery a lot of talent to balance. But if Taylor can carry his strong finish into 2021, his talent will allow him to seize the starting role and continue providing the dominant fantasy production we saw last season.
Jonathan Taylor 2020 Outlook
Taylor dominated on the ground last season at Wisconsin, rushing for 2,003 yards and 21 touchdowns. His 12 career games with at least 200 rushing yards are the most by any player in Football Bowl Subdivision history. And, as ESPN's Mike Clay pointed out, Taylor crushed it at February's Combine, running a position-best 4.39 and a solid 7.01 three-cone despite his size. The main concerns here are potential wear from massive usage at Wisconsin (926 career carries), fumbles (18) and a lack of pass-catching ability (nine drops on 68 targets). Taylor has elite upside as a rusher but could max out as merely a fringe PPR RB1 if he's a non-factor as a receiver in Indy. And the Colts have made it clear this will be a timeshare, at least to start. OC Nick Sirianni called the Colts' running back room a "1-1 punch" with Marlon Mack and Taylor. And Nyheim Hines will still be in the mix with HC Frank Reich expressing his belief the more bodies in the backfield, the better. "I think sometimes you do it by committee, but everybody has their emphasis," Reich said. We'll be looking for further indications of what a timeshare might look like here, but we expect Taylor to be the tip of that spear with Mack, in the final year of his contract, chipping in behind him.
