Devin Singletary 2020 Outlook
Is it fair to say Singletary will enter 2020 as Buffalo's feature running back? As ESPN.com's Marcel Louis-Jacques suggested, "Not quite. ..." As a rookie, Singletary displayed speed to the edge and an ability to pound for tough yards when given a chance. The rookie's 5.1 yards per carry average was tied (with NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry) for highest among all running backs with at least 140 carries. He also forced 22 broken tackles, which is pretty solid considering he missed four games. As NFL.com suggested, the talent is certainly there for Singletary to be the workhorse. Still, he has several areas in which to improve, including negating fumbles (four in just 180 touches) and learning when to hit a single instead of pressing for the home run. So, yes, while Singletary was a godsend for the team in 2019, HC Sean McDermott has said he prefers a multiple-back offense and the Bills never fully embraced Singletary as a bell-cow back last season -- especially after an early-season injury. This year, Frank Gore is gone but the Bills selected Utah RB Zack Moss with the 86th pick overall in April's draft. Like Gore last season, he’ll eat into Singletary's workload but is unlikely to take over as a lead back.
Devin Singletary 2019 Outlook
The Bills selected Singletary in the third round of the NFL Draft, and he will compete for the backup role behind LeSean McCoy right away. Buffalo also has Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon on the roster, but Singletary should be given the best chance to play behind McCoy -- and possibly in tandem. As CBSSports.com noted, the newcomer looks like a McCoy clone, and he could be the eventual starter for the Bills. That could even happen this year, although McCoy, Gore and Yeldon represent a considerable hurdle (and financial investment on the team’s part). Whatever the case, Singletary was a touchdown machine in college despite his diminutive size. In his career he finished with 66 rushing touchdowns. In 2017 he led the nation with 32 rushing TDs, tied for the most carries (301) and ranked fourth in the country with 1,920 yards, a season which culminated in a second-team AP All-American award. He followed that season up with 261 carries for 1,348 yards and 22 rushing touchdowns making him a first-team Conference USA selection. So, the history of production is there even if the immediate and clear path to a workload is not. Bottom line? Singletary is gold in dynasty formats but a definite reach in redraft.
