Devin Singletary 2023 Outlook
For most of his four years with the Buffalo Bills, Singletary operated as the starting running back. Now joining the Houston Texans, it’s expected that Dameon Pierce is the No. 1 option and Singletary is the No. 2. While Singletary has had a perfectly fine career to this point -- consistently posting between 950 and 1,1100 yards from scrimmage -- it’s fair to say Pierce has more upside and is the better pick for fantasy. First-time offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, at the ripe old age of 35, has spent his entire NFL coaching career working for Mike and Kyle Shanahan, the former in Washington and the latter in San Francisco. Slowik is going to take after the Shanahans in terms of designing the run game and utilizing multiple running backs. This really should help both Singletary’s fantasy ceiling and his floor. It’s OK that he’s behind Pierce in the pecking order, because he will not be forgotten back there. Singletary also adds some value catching passes. He has received 41, 50, 50 and 52 targets in his four NFL seasons and has caught 75.1 percent of them.
Devin Singletary 2022 Outlook
As Fansided.com noted, the Bills were expected to draft a running back at some point in the 2022 NFL Draft. Instead of investing an earlier pick on Breece Hall, the Bills instead elected to draft James Cook later in the second round. Cook is primarily going to be a receiving back for the Buffalo Bills as a rookie. This opens up the early down work for Singletary, a role he really excelled in towards the end of the season. In case you missed it, Singletary ended the 2021 season on a tear, scoring nine touchdowns over the team's last six games (three regular season, three playoffs) while surpassing 80 rushing yards in four of them. There are concerns. As CBSsports.com reminded readers, the Bills mostly have run a committee system during head coach Sean McDermott's tenure, and with Zack Moss being a shaky option and Singletary being limited to one very nice hot streak in a three-year career, Cook now will fill out the room. While the most likely outcome is Singletary locking up the lead role, that's not a certainty. The good news? Singletary's value seems to have that possibility baked in. He'll be available at a fair price and we saw the possible upside was outlined above.
Devin Singletary 2021 Outlook
In the weeks prior to the NFL Draft, many predicted the Bills would select Travis Etienne or Najee Harris. GM Brandon Beane helped fuel those fires when he essentially called Singletary and co-rusher Zack Moss slow at his pre-draft press conference. "Our backs aren't home run hitters," Beane said. Nonetheless, Buffalo did not make any attempt to move up for a marquee back; in fact they did not select a back at all in the 2021 draft. That makes Singletary and Moss the biggest post-draft winners on the Bills' roster. The young backs, both former Day 2 picks, will have a chance to show that they can handle the workload for the team. Of course, nothing will be given to Singletary and Moss, as they will face some competition from Antonio Williams and Matt Breida. All that said, fantasy managers should set realistic expectations. For example, Singletary was 25th in the league, rushing for 687 yards last year. As a team, the Bills rushed for the 20th most yards last year, and QB Josh Allen tends to usurp both runners when it matters most: at the goal line. Allen outscored both last year, rushing for eight TDs while the backfield duo found paydirt six times (two for Singletary, four for Moss).
