Daniel Jones 2022 Outlook
Although the team declined to pick up their QB's fifth-year option in April, new head coach Brian Daboll is tasked with rehabbing the career of Jones, who has struggled during his three seasons in the NFL. In his introductory news conference, Daboll said supporting the 24-year-old signal-caller is priority No. 1. "There's a lot of things to like about Daniel, and we'll just take it one day at a time, we'll work with him, we'll help him get better," the former Bills' coordinator, who had plenty of success developing Josh Allen in Buffalo, explained. Fair to say that since Jones was selected No. 6 overall in 2019, the Giants have lacked stability. Daboll will be the third head coach the QB has worked under, and Jones will have his fourth offensive coordinator in four years. Also worth remembering that after Jones suffered a season-ending neck injury against Philadelphia on Nov. 28, the Giants lost their final six games. With Jones in the lineup, the Giants averaged 18.4 points a game. Without him, that number was almost halved (9.3). That said, the Giants scored an NFL-low 24 touchdowns -- 23 on offense -- and finished 31st in the NFL with an average of 15.2 points, 297.3 total yards and 188.0 passing yards a game. So, there's plenty of work to be done and fantasy managers might want to avoid the (re)construction zone.
Daniel Jones 2021 Outlook
GM Dave Gettleman targeted upgrades in weaponry this offseason, and the reason for the effort was apparent: Get Jones as much help as possible. "This is the year, Year 2 to Year 3, that Daniel should really make a major stride," Gettleman said. "We're looking forward to seeing him thrive." Jones, who has shown flashes but isn't close to cementing his spot as a franchise signal-caller, is heading into a pivotal season. Despite 2020 numbers that weren't eye opening when compared to his rookie season, Jones was named the Giants' most improved player by Pro Football Focus after the season, with PFF writing in part: "Jones' PFF grade -- a number designed to isolate the play of a quarterback from his supporting cast -- actually improved from 65.9 as a rookie to 78.4 in 2020." It should be noted that last season Jones operated without RB Saquon Barkley, without a true No. 1 receiving option, with a TE (Evan Engram) whose propensity for drops was incredibly costly and behind an offensive line that was still finding its footing. Now, with first-round pick Kadarius Toney; a trio of free-agents in Kenny Golladay, Kyle Rudolph and John Ross; a healthy Saquon Barkley, and returning veterans Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton and Evan Engram, the table is set for a rebound. There will be no excuses.
Daniel Jones 2020 Outlook
As Michael Eisen reported for the team's website, new HC Joe Judge has been impressed by how Jones has carried himself in this oddest of offseasons. "You can't be a leader if you're not effective at your job and you don't work hard for the team," Judge said. "Those are the two important things." Jones acquitted himself pretty well after taking over for Eli Manning last year. The newcomer completed 61.9 percent of his passes and posted a 24:12 TD-to-INT ratio as a rookie, starting 12 games and helping Giants’ fans to sleep soundly after they bid Manning farewell into the pleasures of retirement. Jones ranked in the top 5 in fantasy points among quarterbacks four times. Only Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott and Jameis Winston did it more. Jones scored 25-plus fantasy points four times as a rookie, and his skills as a runner will make him an intriguing sleeper in fantasy circles. He should also have his full complement of weapons back, too. Having spent the No. 2 overall pick on RB Saquon Barkley the year before, the Giants found value once again with Jones, who has New York excited about its signal-caller for the first time in a while. Now he just has to prove his first campaign wasn't a fluke.
