Mike Gesicki 2020 Outlook
As NFL.com noted, over the first half of last season Gesicki was mostly irrelevant in fantasy leagues. But that wasn't how the story ended. Gesicki went off in the second half, averaging nearly 12 points per game with a points-per-touch average of close to three. He finished things off with three touchdowns in his last two games as his role in the Dolphins’ pass attack increased. For the season Gesicki averaged 11.2 yards per catch and didn't drop a pass. In fact, as Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport notes, Gesicki has yet to tally a drop in the pros. So, should we be concerned about Gesicki's prospects now with wide-receiver-friendly Chan Gailey running the offense? According to ESPN's Cameron Wolfe, Gesicki shouldn't completely disappear in Gailey's offense, but his production may have a ceiling. Yahoo's Liz Loza notes that Gesicki consistently lined up in the slot and was utilized more as a receiver than a traditional tight end while posting top-seven numbers in route participation (71.6 percent) and total targets (nearly six per game). Wolfe believes Gesicki will continue to be used in a "big slot" role, which should help his chances to stay on the field when the offense goes to three- or four-receiver sets. Assuming a role similar to last season, Gesicki is worth consideration as a starter in all formats.
Mike Gesicki 2019 Outlook
The Dolphins selected Gesicki in the second round of last year's draft with the hope that he'd be a threat as a receiver while working to develop his blocking skills. Unfortunately for Miami, Gesicki didn't make too big of an impression on either front. He caught 22 passes for 202 yards and showed that there was a lot of room for him to improve as a blocker. This offseason, Gesicki acknowledged that he fell short of expectations as a rookie and revealed that he's put on 13 pounds in order to provide a more physical presence. He believes the added bulk hasn't taken away from his overall athletic ability and will put him in a better position to succeed this time around. Tight ends often have a hard time as rookies before taking a step forward in their second seasons. The Dolphins and Gesicki will head into the 2019 season hoping that's how things will play out in what will be a New England-style offense (with new HC Brian Flores and OC Chad O'Shea both coming off lengthy stints as Patriots assistants). Yes, former Patriot Dwayne Allen is an impediment, but the veteran has been more blocker than receiver in recent seasons. Also working in Gesicki's favor is the fact that Miami doesn't have much proven receiving talent standing in his way beyond Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker and Albert Wilson.
Mike Gesicki 2018 Outlook
Miami improved its athleticism at this position with Gesicki, who played volleyball and basketball in high school. A star at the NFL Scouting Combine, NFL.com believes Gesicki landed in a terrific spot in terms of his fantasy potential for 2018. The Dolphins lacked a tight end after the release of Julius Thomas, so the Penn State product figures to come right in as the Week 1 starter. While he lacks elite skills as a blocker, Gesicki can still make noise as a pass catcher and potential red-zone threat for Ryan Tannehill. As such, he will have some late-round fantasy appeal. Meanwhile, fellow rookie Durham Smythe is regarded as a blocking tight end although he contends he's simply a tight end who takes pride in his blocking but one that happens to have good hands too. Smythe had 15 receptions for 244 yards and a touchdown as a senior at Notre Dame and figures to play alongside Gesicki in two-tight end formations, just as they did at the Senior Bowl.
