Ronald Jones 2023 Outlook
Once the leading back for a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that won the Super Bowl, Jones is on his third team in as many seasons after a short layover with the Kansas City Chiefs. (He had one rushing attempt in the playoffs, but he’s getting a ring from the Chiefs, too.) Jones will be just 26 as he embarks on his first season with the Dallas Cowboys, and unless Ezekiel Elliott makes a late return to Dallas this summer, Jones is the most obvious option for the Cowboys’ RB2 behind Tony Pollard. Jones offers some value as a receiver and a goal-line pile pusher. Remember, he spent multiple years in Tampa Bay surrendering some of his touches to Leonard Fournette, but in 2020, five of Jones’ six rushing touchdowns came from inside the 5-yard line -- he got just eight carries from there all season. Dallas also brought in Deuce Vaughn in the sixth round of the draft, the son of Cowboys assistant director of scouting Chris Vaughn, so who can say whether the competition for RB2 touches will be fair or if Jerry Jones will have his thumb on the scale, pushing the feel-good story.
Ronald Jones 2022 Outlook
Jones was a second-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2018. He started 25 games in four seasons with the Bucs. He led the team in rushing yards in 2019 (724) and 2020 (978). He also caught 76 passes in the four seasons with a best of 31 in 2019. But he fell from favor with his coaches after the Bucs signed Leonard Fournette during the 2020 season. Jones last season started just three games and moved on from Tampa, signing a one-year contract with the Chiefs, who needed help at running back with Clyde Edwards-Helaire at the top of their depth chart. Remember, their leading rusher in 2021, Darrel Williams was not retained. While their top playoff rusher from last season, Jerick McKinnon, is returning and the team added rookie Isaih Pacheco in the seventh round of April's draft, Jones is expected to complement Edwards-Helaire as a change-of-pace back for a Chiefs offense that finished middle of the pack in 2021 with 115.0 rushing yards per game. Those numbers suggest this offense could use more ground-game consistency to help puncture defenses that sit back against Patrick Mahomes. Worth noting: The Chiefs added Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster to their receiving corps after trading Tyreek Hill to Miami. Those changes lend further credence to the notion KC will try to field a stronger rushing attack with Jones being part of that.
Ronald Jones 2021 Outlook
First the good news: Jones returns to a high-powered offense that will have all 11 starters back from last season. Then the bad news: Jones will share backfield duties again with Leonard Fournette in 2021 after the latter re-signed with the Buccaneers on a one-year deal in March. Now the worse news: The Buccaneers also signed former Bengals pass-catching back Giovani Bernard. ... Jones logged a team-high 192 carries in 2020, with Fournette a distant second with 97 attempts while appearing in just one fewer game. However, the former Jaguar took off in the postseason. As CBSSports.com notes, the addition of Bernard means Jones and Fournette may be stuck splitting carries with very little in the way of passing game work. If one of them were to emerge as the true lead back -- say, 60 percent of the RB carries -- they could still be a viable fantasy starter in an offense that should provide plenty of goal-line opportunities. The argument for Jones is simple: He was much more effective than Fournette throughout the regular season, and it really wasn't until Jones was injured that Fournette got an opportunity to lead the backfield.
