Ronald Jones 2021 Outlook
First the good news: Jones returns to a high-powered offense that will have all 11 starters back from last season. Then the bad news: Jones will share backfield duties again with Leonard Fournette in 2021 after the latter re-signed with the Buccaneers on a one-year deal in March. Now the worse news: The Buccaneers also signed former Bengals pass-catching back Giovani Bernard. ... Jones logged a team-high 192 carries in 2020, with Fournette a distant second with 97 attempts while appearing in just one fewer game. However, the former Jaguar took off in the postseason. As CBSSports.com notes, the addition of Bernard means Jones and Fournette may be stuck splitting carries with very little in the way of passing game work. If one of them were to emerge as the true lead back -- say, 60 percent of the RB carries -- they could still be a viable fantasy starter in an offense that should provide plenty of goal-line opportunities. The argument for Jones is simple: He was much more effective than Fournette throughout the regular season, and it really wasn't until Jones was injured that Fournette got an opportunity to lead the backfield.
Ronald Jones 2020 Outlook
The Buccaneers have not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Doug Martin in 2015. And while he obviously has an opportunity to change that, the odds appear to be stacked against Jones. A complete bust as a rookie, Jones flashed some fantasy potential last season, finishing as RB26 thanks in large part to his work as a receiver. Per FantasyPros, there were 64 running backs who ran at least 100 routes in 2019. The top five in yards per route run were: Austin Ekeler, DeAndre Washington, Dalvin Cook, James White and Jones. But this year, the third-year man will face some serious competition from rookie Ke'Shawn Vaughn. Vaughn's third-round status indicates the team’s investment in his success, but SI.com notes that Vaughn has never displayed the sort of explosiveness Jones demonstrated last season. The path to success for either man runs through Tom Brady, who has targeted his running backs an average of 146.8 times per season since 2015. Brady's penchant for getting the ball out quickly bodes well for Jones' usage in the pass game. Besides the presence of Vaughn, the issue fantasy owners will have to monitor with Jones is consistency. He scored seven or fewer points in eight games, including two games under one point. A more featured role may help mitigate this variance, but fantasy owners need to be paying attention.
