Samaje Perine 2023 Outlook
In Javonte Williams’ section, we said that Perine “revived” his career in Cincinnati. That’s not too bold of a statement. A former fourth-round pick, Washington stopped using him in his second pro season and he bounced between Miami and Cincinnati in 2019. In the three seasons since, he’s established himself as a quality No. 2 option who does some of everything: He’s averaged close to 4.5 yards per carry on limited touches, he’s plunged in for red-zone touchdowns and he’s increased his receiving production year by year. Now with the Denver Broncos, Perine should make a push to take some of Williams’ carries. There are no proven running backs on the depth chart behind these two, though we’re curious if the split will be 60/40 Williams or more like 80/20. Williams is coming off an injury, and the handcuff strategy could apply here. If you’re drafting in a PPR league, you have to like Perine’s 51 targets and four touchdown receptions from 2022. New Broncos coach Sean Payton should, too. He has a reputation for getting his running backs involved in the passing game.
Samaje Perine 2022 Outlook
As WKRC.com's Richard Skinner reminded readers, Joe Mixon is coming off the best season of his career when he rushed for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns and added 42 receptions for 314 yards and three touchdowns. His 1,519 yards from scrimmage ranked eighth in the NFL, and his 16 total touchdowns ranked fourth. He also turns only 26 in July and has suffered less wear and tear than most NFL running backs who have played five seasons. Still, fantasy managers have learned over time that missed time is possible. If that happens, Perine, a capable backup who averaged 4.5 yards per carry and had 27 receptions last year, is currently next man up. Beyond Perine, the team has Chris Evans, who didn't get many opportunities as a rookie. He averaged 4.5 yards per carry and had 15 receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns, but Evans seems best suited to a third down role. In addition, the long-term numbers favor Perine, who has over 1,600 scrimmage yards and 63 receptions over his five-year career. The Bengals did not add any backs in the offseason. As FantasyPros.com put it, "If you spend your first-round pick on Mixon, it would be wise to grab Perine at the end of your draft.'
