Corey Davis 2022 Outlook
As JetsXFactor.com suggested, the first season of Davis' three-year, $37.5 million contract with the New York Jets was an underwhelming one. In nine games prior to season-ending core muscle surgery, Davis averaged 3.8 receptions for 54.7 yards, a sizable drop from his 4.6 receptions for 70.3 yards in a breakout 2020 season for the Titans. Davis also saw his efficiency worsen. After producing a top-tier average of 10.7 yards per target in 2020, he generated a merely decent rate of 8.3 yards per target in 2021. Plus, just 39.0 percent of his targets resulted in a touchdown or first down, a similarly mediocre number that is a far cry from his elite rate of 53.3 percent in 2020. In addition, despite playing barely more than half the season, he had a career-high six drops, two more than his previous high. He also had two fumbles after fumbling only once in each of his first four seasons. Meanwhile, rookie Elijah Moore emerged as a high-upside weapon at the position and the team added a first-round wideout to the mix, selecting Garrett Wilson 10th overall. As ESPN's Mike Clay suggested, it's possible Davis will make the leap back into the flex discussion if QB Zach Wilson makes a huge second-year leap, but there's not much upside with Moore and Wilson in the mix.
Corey Davis 2021 Outlook
Davis turned in the best season of his career in 2020 with the Titans, and the Jets are banking on that production continuing. ... Davis, the fifth-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, heads for the Big Apple on a three-year deal worth $37.5 million. ... In 2020, Davis formed an impressive, though somewhat overlooked, tandem with A.J. Brown for Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The Jets are hoping for much of the same, bringing in Davis after he turned in career-highs of 65 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns last season. Any of those numbers would have led a beleaguered Jets receiving corps in 2020. "I do consider myself Wide Receiver 1 [because of] my ability to get open, my speed, separation," Davis said. "I feel like I can do it all. I feel like I'm a 1,000-yard receiver. It's up to me to put in the work to make sure I'm healthy and play a full season." Davis, another free-agent signing in Keelan Cole, and rookie Elijah Moore join incumbents Denzel Mims and Jamison Crowder to give the Jets an upgrade across the board at receiver. And Davis believes he can be the go-to guy for incoming rookie Zach Wilson.
