Michael Thomas 2023 Outlook
Injuries have repeatedly prevented Thomas from getting on the field, and it's getting hard to consider him a viable option. The NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 has played in just 10 games over the past three seasons while dealing with an assortment of ankle and foot injuries. After missing the entire 2021 season, there was hope Thomas would bounce back last season, but he played in just three games before dislocating a toe. When more than a month of rest didn't help, Thomas underwent season-ending surgery. Now it is another offseason of rehab at a time in which the Saints have a new quarterback in Derek Carr. Thomas caught two touchdown passes in the season opener last season, displaying hope he could reach his past form before the latest injury changed the situation. The three-time Pro Bowler has 21 100-yard outings during his career with 10 of them occurring in a 2019 campaign that included 149 catches and 1,725 yards. Thomas also has 18 games of 10 or more catches so you see how much Carr would like to see him healthy.
Michael Thomas 2022 Outlook
After missing all of 2021, we're getting answers to some questions here. By all accounts, the Saints and Thomas seem to have put their bad blood behind them and are starting the 2022 season on a strong note. As Fansided.com's Kristen Wong reminded readers, ever since he got hurt in 2020, Thomas encountered setback after setback with his nagging ankle injury, and his relationship with the Saints' franchise was strained when he essentially "ghosted" the team for a majority of the 2020 offseason. One successful surgery later, Thomas hopes to make an immediate impact in the Saints' offense and return to elite 201. In addition, the Saints recently restructured Thomas' contract, which further sealed his return, and new head coach Dennis Allen said in May the team expected Thomas to be ready to hit the field Week 1 (although his availability for training camp is worth watching). Thomas had one of the greatest seasons for a receiver in NFL history in 2019 with 149 catches for 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns. But he played only seven games in 2020, catching 40 passes for 438 yards and no touchdowns before sitting out last year. The 2019 Offensive Player of the Year may not be as dominant as he once was, and he'll be playing with Jameis Winston and not Drew Brees, but there's no question he's the most dangerous downfield weapon in New Orleans.
Michael Thomas 2021 Outlook
Named the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 after setting a league record with 149 catches, Thomas fell far short of expectations in 2020 and reportedly had surgeries on both ankles early this offseason. The star wideout knew it was likely Drew Brees' last year and didn't want to miss out on the final opportunity to try and win a Super Bowl with him. He often wouldn't practice all week, yet would still play in games -- at much less than 100 percent -- after taking pain medication, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Thomas played in just seven regular-season games in 2020 after an ankle injury that he suffered in Week 1. He finally returned from injured reserve for the NFC wild-card game vs. Chicago, scoring his first touchdown of the season, after the Saints decided to rest him over the final three games of the regular season to try and get him as close to 100 percent as possible for the playoffs. Now, despite Brees' retirement and some question as to who his starting quarterback will be (Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill), those drafting Thomas this fall could get a huge return on the discounted price.
