Tyler Higbee 2023 Outlook
Higbee emerged as the No. 1 receiver for the Rams when All-Pro WR Cooper Kupp was lost to a season-ending knee injury on Nov. 13. He finished the season with 108 targets and could keep a solid number as Los Angeles shuffles the chairs on the WR depth chart again. If it’s big plays and long gains you need to win a league, keep shopping. Consistency has been Higbee’s calling card. Higbee’s TD total (three) last season is a downside, but he has done his best work against familiar division opponents, including 12 total catches last season against both Arizona and San Francisco. As long as Matthew Stafford can stay healthy for the 2023 season, the outlook for Higbee is solid as a No. 2 tight end in most formats. The Rams are shaky in a few critical areas -- receiver depth, consistency in the running game and offensive line -- that feed doubts around Higbee returning to 72-reception status. But his stellar output against known defenses is nothing new. He had three TDs against the 49ers in two games in 2021, when he also posted 61 receptions and five TDs.
Tyler Higbee 2022 Outlook
Higbee enters his seventh NFL season and, as SBNation.com's Kenneth Arthur points out, though his 2021 stats don’t look that much different than his 2020 version, how he was utilized in the offense actually did change significantly in the first year of Matthew Stafford. For one thing, Higbee's Average Depth of Target fell -- from 8.0 yards in 2020 to 5.3 last year. Arthur added there was also a problem with interceptions that wasn't there before: Only one pass throw to Higbee was intercepted over the previous three seasons with Jared Goff combined. But in the first year of Stafford, three of his 85 targets to Higbee were picked off. That said, with 33 first downs, Higbee had nearly as many first downs as his career-high of 36 in 2019, when he went off in the final five games of the year. The Rams have other options at the position -- Brycen Hopkins, who filled in nicely with Higbee out in February's Super Bowl win, and Kendall Blanton -- have both shown promise. But Higbee is only 29 and he's signed for the next two seasons at $8 million and $7.6 million, respectively, so right now the price is reasonable, and the Rams should be happy enough with the return.
Tyler Higbee 2021 Outlook
From top to bottom, at least on paper, the Rams have as much talent on offense as anyone. Their receiving corps is deep, their backfield features two dynamic runners, the offensive line is solid (when healthy) and Matthew Stafford is an above-average quarterback who should thrive in Sean McVay's offense. But as USA Today's Cameron DaSilva notes, one position that shouldn't get overlooked is tight end, where Higbee has been the team’s top option for the last several years. In his last two seasons, Higbee has caught 113 passes for 1,255 yards and eight touchdowns, working as the No. 1 tight end ahead of Gerald Everett. Now that Everett is in Seattle, Higbee should see an uptick in playing time and earn an even larger role in the pass game. Why the value then? Over the last five weeks of the 2019 season, Higbee ranked third among all players in receptions (43). No player had more receiving yards (522), either. Unfortunately, the remarkable finish to that 2019 campaign didn’t carry over into 2020. Higbee remained the team’s TE1, out-snapping Everett by nearly 200 plays, but his production took a dive and fantasy managers are wary. Higbee shouldn't be pushed much by the Rams' other tight ends -- Brycen Hopkins, Johnny Mundt and Jacob Harris -- which should also add to the upside and value of a late-round pick.
