Duke Johnson 2020 Outlook
Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde are gone, but the news still isn't great for Johnson due to the arrival of another Johnson. That would be David Johnson. So Duke's path to workload isn't clear assuming David remains healthy. In fact, Duke Johnson will take a back seat to the other Johnson, who arrives as the de facto starter after being acquired in the deal sending DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona. Still, we have something to hang your hat on if you need a late-round pick at the position: According to Pro Football Focus, Duke Johnson ranked third in the NFL in terms of PPR points per touch last season, collecting three receiving touchdowns and two rushing scores in his first season with the Texans. This is noteworthy in that he finished in a tie with Christian McCaffrey by posting 1.2 PPR points per touch last year. As USA Today suggested, after catching 44 passes for 410 yards in 2019, Johnson would make for a decent waiver wire pickup capable of filling in when the starters could be on a bye week.
Duke Johnson 2019 Outlook
After signing Kareem Hunt, GM John Dorsey made it clear the move didn't make Johnson expendable "yet." The Browns are in no rush to deal Johnson because Hunt will miss the season’s first eight games due to suspension. But there's more to it than that. Since entering the league in 2015, Johnson's 6.5 yards per touch average from scrimmage is the third-best in the league among running backs. Dating back to his rookie year, Johnson is inside the top-3 in receptions (235) and receiving yards (2,170) among eligible NFL backs. His 235 receptions are the most by a Brown through their first four years. ... Still, Johnson spent much of last season frustrated with his lack of touches. Per the Cleveland Plain Dealer, he never went public with his beef except to say a few times that he was embracing his primary role as a blocker. Even after OC Todd Haley was fired Johnson’s touches remained minimal. He did have nine catches in Freddie Kitchens' first game as coordinator, but he averaged only 2.5 the rest of the way. All told, Johnson's touches were reduced from 156 (82 rushing, 74 receiving) in 2017 to only 87 last season (40 rushing, 47 receiving). So, barring an injury ahead of him on the depth chart or trade to another team, it's hard to figure out how fantasy owners can leverage his presence into consistent scoring.
