Melvin Gordon 2020 Outlook
In five seasons with the Chargers, Gordon compiled 6,113 scrimmage yards and generated three seasons with 12-plus touchdowns. Still, Gordon felt the Chargers' offense was holding him back. “It kind of wasn't a system built for me," he recently said. "But I feel like Denver kinda runs my style of football, and I think it's a great fit." The Broncos signed Gordon to a two-year deal believing the running back's dual-threat skillset will mesh better with the type of offense new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur wants to run. While the Chargers want to feature play-action and more wide zone runs under Anthony Lynn, Gordon highlighted the Broncos' use of inside zone runs that allow him to read the line and then simply hit the crease. First, however, Gordon will have to beat out Phillip Lindsay for snaps, and show that averaging 3.9 yards per carry or fewer in four out of his first five seasons was a product of the Chargers' offense, not his own deficiencies. That said, because Gordon will share the load, his production is unlikely to exceed his numbers from 2017, when he logged 284 carries and 1,105 rushing yards in the only 16-game season of his career to date. That said, count on him to be used plenty at the goal line in Denver. The touchdowns should still come.
Melvin Gordon 2019 Outlook
Gordon heads into the final year of the contract he signed as a 2015 first-round pick, having thus far delivered at a high level. So, why no extension? "He's a three-down back and puts a lot of balls in the end zone for us, a lot of touchdowns," GM Tom Telesco recently said. "He's a great player. We've got him and a number of other guys that we will look at extending at some point. ..." But how much will the Chargers be willing to pay? And when? Remember, they played four games without Gordon last season and won them all, including huge victories at Pittsburgh and Kansas City. Those results were a testament to the players who filled in for Gordon -- most notably Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson and even undrafted rookie Detrez Newsome -- but also a bit of a statistical oddity. The Chargers averaged only 84 yards rushing in those four wins, a 33-yard-per-game drop from their season standard. So, even though the offense is undoubtedly better with Gordon -- he finished inside the top 10 in the league last season in broken tackles and yards gained after contact -- the presence of those other backs is worth noting, especially when you're splitting hairs within this tier of high-end fantasy
Melvin Gordon 2018 Outlook
Gordon had a strong 2017, rushing for more than 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns and adding four more (and nearly 500 yards) as a receiver. Gordon played through some nagging injuries and at one point was challenged by HC Anthony Lynn to get back to being a more physical back and collecting yards after contact. Gordon responded, and over his final four games finished with 77 carries for 330 yards and three touchdowns and 16 catches for 174 yards pleasing his head coach. "I thought he was one of the best runners in the game the last four weeks," Lynn said. The Chargers' offensive line could be better in 2018 as well. The team added center Mike Pouncey as a free agent from Miami, and right guard Forrest Lamp will hopefully be healthy after missing his rookie season in 2017 with a torn ACL. Better blocking should help Gordon improve on his career average of 3.8 yards per carry, but, as Lynn pointed out, over those final four games Gordon averaged 4.3 yards per carry. That has Lynn even more excited for Gordon’s outlook this year. "We're talking about giving the ball to Melvin more," Lynn said. Fantasy owners take note.
