Melvin Gordon 2022 Outlook
Gordon had 203 carries for 918 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Javonte Williams had 203 carries for 903 yards and four touchdowns. Now, after Gordon re-signed with Denver in April on a one-year, they'll run it back. While the Broncos benefit from a 1-2 punch featuring Williams and Gordon, fantasy managers hoping to see the former take on more of a lead role will have to wait and see a bit longer to see if that's how it works. According to the Denver Post, unclear is if the Broncos told Gordon he will have a supporting role to Williams. Gordon started all 16 of his games last year. In March, new coach Nathaniel Hackett made it clear that he wants to have plenty of help at tailback. "A lot of the places that I've been," Hackett explained prior to Gordon's return. "There's always been kind of two guys because you always want to try to split the load as much as you can. We'll just have to see how the whole thing goes." We now know how it will go in 2022. Williams and Gordon, sharing the load for another season. We expect Williams' role to increase, but buying the cheaper component in a timeshare often works out for fantasy managers. Just make sure you're not counting on Gordon as a front-line player.
Melvin Gordon 2021 Outlook
In a move that seemed odd at the time, Gordon signed with the Broncos last offseason. He made the Pro Bowl with the Chargers and averaged 50 receptions over the previous three seasons. However, Denver already had its own Pro Bowler in Phillip Lindsay. Nonetheless, after a slow start, Gordon averaged 4.98 yards per carry over the final eight games and led the Broncos with 10 touchdowns. But Gordon also faced an off-field issue as he was charged with a DUI and speeding on Oct. 14. If convicted, Gordon faced a three-game suspension by the NFL and a possibility the Broncos might release him. Instead, he pleaded guilty to reckless driving and the DUI charges were eventually dismissed due to evidentiary concerns. "Man, I was super relieved. I am not going to lie to you," Gordon said. While Gordon became the Broncos' most productive offensive player, he did not reach his goals. He fell short of 1,000 yards but believes at age 28, his best football remains ahead of him. Even with Lindsay now in Houston and out of the picture, there's a new obstacle: Rookie Javonte Williams, who will provide even more serious competition for touches than Lindsay did. Assuming Gordon remains the starter, Williams will still be a limiting factor.
Melvin Gordon 2020 Outlook
In five seasons with the Chargers, Gordon compiled 6,113 scrimmage yards and generated three seasons with 12-plus touchdowns. Still, Gordon felt the Chargers' offense was holding him back. “It kind of wasn't a system built for me," he recently said. "But I feel like Denver kinda runs my style of football, and I think it's a great fit." The Broncos signed Gordon to a two-year deal believing the running back's dual-threat skillset will mesh better with the type of offense new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur wants to run. While the Chargers want to feature play-action and more wide zone runs under Anthony Lynn, Gordon highlighted the Broncos' use of inside zone runs that allow him to read the line and then simply hit the crease. First, however, Gordon will have to beat out Phillip Lindsay for snaps, and show that averaging 3.9 yards per carry or fewer in four out of his first five seasons was a product of the Chargers' offense, not his own deficiencies. That said, because Gordon will share the load, his production is unlikely to exceed his numbers from 2017, when he logged 284 carries and 1,105 rushing yards in the only 16-game season of his career to date. That said, count on him to be used plenty at the goal line in Denver. The touchdowns should still come.
