Marcus Mariota 2022 Outlook
After the Falcons traded Matt Ryan to the Colts, Mariota became an immediate target. Why Mariota? For starters, he arrives in Atlanta with deep knowledge of head coach Arthur Smith's system. He worked with Smith in Tennessee, when he was Titans quarterback and Smith was a tight ends coach who became offensive coordinator in 2019. That was Mariota's last season in Tennessee, after Ryan Tannehill took hold of the starting job during that campaign. The Oregon product spent the last two years as Derek Carr's backup in Las Vegas, though he was primarily used as a change-of-pace option as a running quarterback. His last prolonged playing stretch came in 2020, when he threw for 226 yards, one touchdown and one interception, with nine rushes for 88 yards and a touchdown, while stepping in for an injured Carr against the Chargers. Mariota's mobility is one of his greatest assets, able to create plays with his legs and his arm. He has an 89.5 passer rating in the NFL and a 29-32 record over 61 starts, all with Tennessee. As ESPN.com suggested, Mariota as a bridge starter (the team added Desmond Ridder in April's draft) isn't the worst idea in the world, especially given his previous experience with Smith, but there's little reason to expect anything beyond replacement-level play from him.
Marcus Mariota 2021 Outlook
Mariota took a pay cut in order to remain with the Raiders this offseason, and that leaves him in line to be Derek Carr's backup for the second straight season. There was talk of trading Mariota, but the Raiders didn't find a match. Mariota appeared in one game for the Raiders last season, a 30-27 loss to the Chargers in Week 15. He went 17-of-28 for 226 yards with a touchdown, while rushing for 88 yards and a score on nine carries in relief of the injured Carr. The Titans made Mariota the No. 2 overall choice in 2015, and he played five seasons in Tennessee before losing his job to Ryan Tannehill last season. He went 29-32 as a starter, passing for 13,207 yards with 76 touchdowns and 44 interceptions with the Titans. Despite his current backup role, Mariota intends to continue preparing as he always has. "My vision's always been to be a starter and to be successful at that position. That has not changed, even in the circumstances that I'm in right now," Mariota said. While Mariota's focus may be on starting again, he understands his role with the Raiders and sees an opportunity to grow as a player this year despite his reserve status.
Marcus Mariota 2020 Outlook
Mariota's deal with the Raiders has some interesting incentives that could make him a pretty penny -- if things take a drastic turn under center. Mariota signed a two-year, $17.6 million deal that includes a first-year $7.5 million fully guaranteed base salary. The initial details of his contract aren’t all that intriguing, but the incentives and escalators could potentially pay Mariota as much as $37.5 million. Of course, Mariota would have to take the field in order to earn them, but it's a fair indication of what the Raiders think the quarterback could do if he's pressed into action. There are also reasons to believe incumbent starter Derek Carr is the superior player and should hold on to the gig, but GM Mike Mayock and HC Jon Gruden outbid a competitive group of suitors for Mariota because they were intrigued. We saw flashes of Mariota's dynamic playmaking ability last season, but some of his issues, such as holding the ball too long and staring down receivers, are signs that he still needs further development. Whatever the case, Gruden has done wonders with far less talented reclamation projects at the position before, so it's a nice landing spot for Mariota's second act.
